Softball Takes Pair from Stevens

WEEHAWKEN, N.J. –The Manhattanville College softball team logged their second-straight doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon, winning a pair of games at Stevens. With the sweep, the Valiants improve to 5-8 on the season.

Game One Recap: Manhattanville 2, Stevens 0

The Valiants took the opener after a dominant showing at the plate for Juliana Parkes (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Belmont Secondary), along with a seven-inning shutout from Charli Shinstine (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy).

It would be a scoreless four innings between the two teams as only two runners were left on base for the Valiants. With two on base for Manhattanville in the top of the fifth inning, Parkes would single to third base bringing Samantha Reyer (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) home for the first run of the day.

Later in the seventh inning, Alexa Lazur (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) singled to the shortstop before advancing to second base on a throwing error. Sydni Brooks (Anaheim, Calif./Cypress) would then drop a sac-bunt to advance Lazur to third. Parkes roped a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in another run. It would be three straight groundouts for the Ducks in the bottom of the frame for the Valiants to secure the win.

Shinstine would record her 21st career shutout while allowing only five hits. She would walk five batters, while striking out a season-high nine.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 5, Stevens 3

Coming off her first win of the season on Tuesday against Stockton, Emily Mottoshiski (Craryville, N.Y./Taconic Hills) threw a full seven innings in the backend of Saturday's action. She allowed only three runs on six hits while walking three and striking out a pair of batters.

The Ducks would score two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an early lead before a late game rally for the Valiants.

In the sixth inning, it would be a crazy series of events that led up to all five runs scoring for Manhattanville. With one out from a pop fly, Samantha Walsh (Spring City, Pa./Owen J Roberts) was hit by a pitch as Sarah Harker (Irvine, Calif./Irvine) singled to left center field, advancing Walsh into scoring position. With two outs, Rachel Coleman (Lake Forest, Calif./Mission Viejo) reached on a fielder's choice with both Walsh and Harker scoring on throwing errors to tie it up. Isabella Tansey (San Diego, Calif./University City) singled to center field bringing another run home before Sydni Brooks (Anaheim, Calif./Cypress) capitalized on the lead by hitting a two-run homer, her first of the season. Valiants leading 5-2.

With two runners on in the bottom of the sixth, Stevens would respond with another run off a single. It would be a scoreless seventh inning to put the finishing touches on a stellar performance from Manhattanville.

The Valiants make their much-anticipated home debut on Wednesday, Apr. 4 as they take on NYU with the doubleheader first pitch at 3 p.m.
