FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - Despite outhitting their counterparts in both contests, the Manhattanville College baseball team fell in both games, 1-0 and 5-0, respectively, on Friday afternoon. The result marks the first time since 2000 that the Valiants have been shut out in two consecutive games. With the loss, the Valiants slip below .500, residing at 7-9, with an even 2-2 record in the young conference schedule.
Game One: Manhattanville 0, Farmingdale State 1 (Seven Innings)
Ryan McCann (Medford, N.Y./Longwood) took the mound for the Valiants in game one, only needing seventy pitches to toss six straight innings, giving up only three hits and one earned run.
Manhattanville looked to threaten early in the first inning, after getting runners on first and second thanks to a walk and a single through the left side of the infield. Johnny Dougherty locked down the Valiants on the bump for the Rams, allowing only three more hits in the contest through the seven innings hurled.
Farmingdale took the lead in the bottom of the third, using a Ryan Wasserman double to begin the inning. Two batters later, Richie Heyder would drive in the lone run of the game after singling up the middle for Wasserman to make his way across the plate.
The Valiants would have their best chance to even the score in the top of the fifth inning when Christian Amoruso (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) came up and hit a double to right center and was subsequently moved over on a Joshua Gillison (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) productive at-bat. The Rams would escape the inning unscathed, and on their way to a 1-0 win in game one.
Game Two: Manhattanville 0, Farmingdale 5
The Valiants' scoring woes continued into game two, despite outhitting the Rams five to four.
Throughout the first four and a half innings, neither team could generate offense, combining for five hits over the 32 at-bats.
The Rams broke open the game in a big way, putting up a crooked four spot in the bottom of the fifth inning. Daniel Deutsch walked to begin the inning and was immediately brought home by Justin DiMartino on a double to left field. Tyler DiRocco subsequently walked, putting two runners on for Greg Friedman, as he singled to third bringing around another run. Wasserman singled to second base to bring in two more runners, pinning the score at 4-0 for the Rams.
Farmingdale would add one more run to their total in the bottom of the eight, Jordan Lambert doubled to start off the innings and score on the next batter thanks to an error by the first baseman.
Ryan Costa (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport Blue-Point) was tabbed with the loss for the Valiants, pitching four innings and striking out three while producing five groundouts and four flyouts. Gregory Esposito (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay) came in relief for the Valiants, producing three and two thirds of effective pitching, striking out five and only allowing two hits.
