Baseball Drops Doubleheader to St. Joseph's-Long Island

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - The Manhattanville University baseball team fell to St. Joesph's-Long Island in weekend doubleheader action, 4-1 and 16-3, on Saturday afternoon at Gregg Alfano Field. In the midst of a four-game skid, the Valiants now sit at 7-11 overall, with a 2-4 mark in conference play.

Game One: Manhattanville 1, St. Joesph's-Long Island (7 Innings)

The Valiants kept up with the Golden Eagles offense in getting on the basepath, eight hits to Manhattanville's seven, but the Valiants stranded eleven runners, leading to a final score of 4-1.

Manhattanville looked to threaten runs in the top of the first inning, as they loaded the bases thanks to two straight singles to right field from Joseph McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) and Ryan Osso (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester), leading to Gregory Tashik (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park Jr./Sr.) walking to first base. Justin Jaskolski worked out of the jam, striking out the next two batters looking.

The Golden Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the second inning after starting out the inning with a triple to right center off the bat of Anselmo Joya. Marco Gullo eventually brought home the man on third with a single to center field, making it 1-0.

Answering back quickly, the Valiants would level the score in the next top half of the inning. McDonald walked, subsequently stealing second base, making way for Marco Clara (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) who got the nod at designated hitter for game one. Clara singled through the left side of the infield, bringing home the runner from second, tying the contest at one-all.

SJLI retook the lead in the bottom half of the fourth frame, as the Golden Eagles started off the inning with a walk. Mike DiFilippo created a productive out, moving the runner up ninety feet with a sacrifice grounder to the pitcher. James Maggio doubled down the left field line bringing home the baserunner on second, putting the score at 2-1.

The Golden Eagles would then extend their lead in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Gullo led off with a single to left field, being advanced up by a Maggio bunt single. Gullo would make his way across the plate from a blunder by the pitcher, moving all the runners up. Dom Crema produced a sacrifice fly to the right fielder in his at-bat, bringing across another runner for a 4-1 lead, and eventual victory.

Miles Durney was tabbed with the loss on the mound for the Valiants, as he went three and one third innings, striking out two while only allowing two earned runs. Three pitchers came in relief of Durney, with Lacoparra collecting two strikeouts in his one and one third innings in relief.

Game Two: Manhattanville 3, St. Joesph's-Long Island 16 (7 Innings)

SJLI's offensive exploded for sixteen runs in seven innings, highlighted by lead-off hitter Joe Hackal, who went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in and making his way around the bases on all times reached.

Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) started off the contest strong, singling to right field in the opening plate appearance of the game. Parisi stole second base, then stole third and scored on an error by the third baseman for the 1-0 Valiants lead.

The Golden Eagles would put up a crooked number in the bottom of the first, having runners on the corners before a wild pitch put runners on second and third. John Lynch would single to center field bringing across both baserunners, taking the lead at 2-1. Difilippo brought home another run on back-to-back singles hit to center, eventually putting another run on the board with a double steal, stealing home for a 4-1 score.

The Valiants would slice into the Golden Eagles lead with Braden Kunda (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) reaching on a fielder's choice bringing home Michael Musantry (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), who was camped on third after a double to right field, making the score 4-2.

At the bottom of the second, the Golden Eagles would expand their lead, bringing two more runs in from a sacrifice fly to right and a wild pitch to bring the score to 6-2.

In the next time up for SJLI, they would put up another four spot on the score board, first coming from another double steal, for the first run of the inning. Followed by a single to right in the next at-bat, the Golden Eagles would hit two more singles to right field for another run, making it 9-2. A bases loaded walk followed up by a groundout plating a runner, pushed the score to 11-2.

Musantry would make his way home from a groundout to first base, seeing the score sit at 11-3 for the Valiants final run scored in the game.

SJLI would score four more runs in the next two innings from singles and doubles, as the final score sat at 16-3.

Ray White (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) earned the loss on the mound for the Valiants, as he went two and one third innings. Aiden Cardel (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) pitched the majority of the contest in relief, going three innings and striking out two batters.
