Baseball Picks Up Skyline Sweep of Mount Saint Vincent

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University baseball team plated 16 total runs to complete a sweep of Skyline foe Mount Saint Vincent to close out the weekend on Sunday afternoon. With the pair of wins, the Valiants improved to 9-11 on the season and 4-4 overall in conference play.

Game One Recap: Manhattanville 8, Mount Saint Vincent 0

The Valiants scored eight unanswered runs to take the opener, behind a strong pitching performance as Ryan McCann (Medford, N.Y./Longwood) went a full 7.0 innings while giving up only six hits and striking out four batters.

In the bottom of the first inning, a single from Michael Musantry (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) got the Valiants momentum going followed by three straight walks to score their first run of the day. It would then be a sacrifice fly for Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) to bring in another run while Michael Ambrosecchia collected an RBI single through the right side for a 3-0 lead.

After being held scoreless through the second and third inning, the Valiants would get back on the board with a four-run fourth inning. Goohs doubled followed by a walk for Ambrosecchia as Goohs stole third. They would advance on the throw and error with Goohs coming home to score. CJ Archul (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) reached on a fielder's choice with Ambrosecchia scoring on another error. Gregory Tashik (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park Jr./Sr.) hit a 2 RBI double to capitalize on the lead as Musantry hit an RBI single to close out scoring for the Valiants, 8-0.

It would be a scoreless fifth, sixth, and seventh inning for both the Dolphins and Valiants.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 8, Mount Saint Vincent 7

The Dolphins put up four runs in the first, but the lead was short lived as the Valiants put five runs on the board in the bottom of the inning. Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) and Joseph McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) each hit a single to bring a run in while the other three would come from a wild pitch, an infield fly, and a steal home.

Both teams then traded runs for the remainder of the game as Mount Saint Vincent scored another run in the second off a fielder's choice to tie up, 5-5. The Valiants took back the lead with a 2 RBI single from Archul in the bottom of the third followed by an error in the fourth for an unearned run.

Both teams went scoreless through the middle frames (5th-8th) with action picking up in the ninth.

In the top of the ninth inning, a 2 RBI single from the Dolphins' Joshua McCormick would bring Mount Saint Vincent back within one but Gregory Esposito (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay) and company would be able to nab the win and complete the sweep.

Chris Antonelli (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) earned the win, pitching relief for 3.1 innings allowing one run on two hits and striking out three. Esposito got a five-inning save for the Valiants allowing two runs on two hits, also striking out four.

The Valiants hit the road to take on New Paltz on Wednesday, Apr. 10 for a single game at 3:30 p.m.
