Baseball Walked Off By New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University baseball team dropped a heartbreaker on Wednesday afternoon as the Valiants were walked off by New Paltz in a 11-10 slugfest. The loss drops the Valiants to 9-12 on the season.

Down to their final out of the game, the Hawks staged a rally in the bottom of the seventh that was capped off as Tommy Kreider delivered a two-run game-winning double off of Matthew Messina (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) to complete the comeback in a game in which the Hawks trailed by as many as five runs.

There was no shortage of offense as the teams combined for 21 runs in the seven inning affair, but just three runs crossed the plate over the first four innings. The Hawks earned runs in the first and third innings as a pair of Anthony Pericolosi singles scored Michael Ascanio twice to put the home team up 2-0.

After Marco Clara (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) scored on a passed ball in the fourth to account for Manhattanville's opening run, the Valiants plated five runs on five hits an inning later to take their first lead of the day. After Gregory Tashik (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park Jr./Sr.) was hit by a pitch and Mike Ambrosecchia (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) singled to right, Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) laced a two run double to left, clearing the bases and putting the Valiants up 3-2. Clara followed up with a double of his own to plate Parisi and scored two batters later on Ryan Osso's (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) single. The Valiants got their final run of the frame on a fielder's choice that allowed Osso to score, putting Manhattanville up 6-2.

The Hawks immediately began fighting back with a three-run bottom of the fifth, with Pericolosi driving in one on an RBI single and Dillon Ristano lacing a two-run double.

Manhattanville's bats went right back to work with four hits in the sixth to drive home four more runs. Joshua Gillison (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) hit a two-run double that plated Parisi and Jordan Wazolek (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) before an Anthony Caputo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) single scored Clara and Gillison, extending the Valiant lead up to 10-5.

The Valiants would be unable to protect the five-run advantage over the final two innings as New Paltz put up a four spot of their own in the bottom half before staging the walk-off in the seventh.

Aidan Tumbleson (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) pitched 4.2 innings in the start for Manhattanville, allowing five runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out one. Ian Murray (Commack, N.Y./Commack) pitched 1.1 innings of relief, being tagged for four runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Messina was charged with the loss, dropping to 1-1 on the season after giving up the two runs in the seventh on a pair of hits.

Four of the Valiants' 15 total hits went for extra bases, all doubles. Clara had a great game at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Gillison enjoyed a three-hit day, with Parisi and Osso both adding multi-hit outings.
