PURCHASE, N.Y. - Needing extra innings to put away the surging Valiants, the Manhattanville University baseball team fell in both contests to visiting Maritime, 7-1 and 13-12, on Saturday afternoon at Manhattanville Baseball Field. With the two losses, Manhattanville falls to 9-14, slipping to a 4-6 mark in conference play.
Game One: Manhattanville 1, Maritime 7
The Privateers jumped out to an early with the crack of Logan Martinson's bat, as his homerun to left center drove in two runs, to put the game at 2-0 in the top of the first. The Valiants threatened in the bottom half of the inning but ended up stranding two runners on base.
Maritime would strike once again in the top half off the third, Anthony Madigan would reach thanks to a fielding error in right, advancing to second on the error. Martinson would single up the middle for his third run batted in of the contest, having the score sit at 3-0.
Manhattanville would get their first, and only run, on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Mike Ambrosecchia (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) reached after being hit by a pitch. Jordan Wazolek (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) came into pitch run for the shaken-up Ambrosecchia. Wazolek would advance to second on a ground ball, eventually being driven in by a Deven Silva (Yonkers, N.Y./Mount Saint Michael Academy) double down the left-field line, pinning the score at 3-1.
Maritime would give themselves cushion in the top sixth, when Rob Copozzi left the yard halfway up the hill in right field, bringing in two runs and reestablishing their lead at 5-1. Madigan would subsequently single up the middle bringing in two more runs, putting the score at 7-1, as that score would hold when Matt Demme recorded the final out.
Demme needed only 101 pitches to stifle the Valiants' offense, allowing one earned run on seven hits, striking out three batters.
Ryan McCann (Medford, N.Y./Longwood) was tabbed with the loss for Manhattanville, as his five and one third inning efforts played second fiddle to his counterpart.
Game Two: Manhattanville 12, Maritime 13 (10 Innings)
In a game which saw 36 hits in total, the Privateers came out on top thanks to a baserunning blunder by the Valiants.
Starting in the bottom of the seventh where the score sat at 10-8 in the Privateers' favor, the Valiants pounced on new pitcher Sean Mylan. Silva kicked off the run with a single up the middle, leading to Anthony Pressimone (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) singling to right field, as Anthony Mezzaucella (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) pinch-ran for Pressimone. An error by the third baseman led to Silva advancing to third and making the turn for home to put the score at 10-9. In the next at-bat, Michael Musantry (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) would drive in two runs with his single to left-center, giving the Valiants an 11-10 lead.
Maritime would take the lead back in the next half inning after getting runners on first and second, with an error by the shortstop allowing one run to score before the inning ended, tying things at 11-all.
Top ninth, the Privateers found themselves in a bases loaded situation following an intentional walk, but TJ Fuerst (Purchase, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) was able to work out of the jam making way for the bottom of the inning. Musantry got on base with a strong shot down the left field line, with Parisi being intentionally walked, Clara flew out to left for extra innings.
The first batter kicked off extras in a big way, as Leipold homered to deep center for the Privateers, for a 12-11 lead, with Madigan later singling bringing in another run for a 13-11 score.
Manhattanville found themselves within one run after capitalizing on a back throw down to third base, making way for Tashik to score. The Valiants had runners on first and second as Archil grounded into a double play and was called out due to baserunning interference from the force play at second base, seeing the Privateers take both games.
Fuerst was giving the loss on the mound for the Valiants, going five innings, only allowing two earned runs on four hits and striking out five.
