Men’s Lacrosse Bested by Mass. Maritime

Buzzards Bay, Mass. – Outscored 6-2 in the fourth quarter, the Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team fell on the road on Sunday afternoon by a final of 17-10 to Massachusetts Maritime. The non-conference loss is the Valiants' second straight defeat as the team falls to 3-2 on the young season.

A pair of five goal performances from the Buccaneers would be too much to overcome as they showed offensive dominance from start to finish. The game would start with a quick goal from Mass. Maritime's Joe Vricella at 1:34. The Valiants would have opportunities to respond, firing off eight shots before scoring their first goal of the day…  a man up by Tyler Berch (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) at 10:14. It would be a 1-1 game with less than five minutes to go in the first quarter. Daniel Kane would capitalize and score his first of the day at 12:29 for the Bucs making it 2-1 heading into the second.

The second quarter would start the same as the first, Vricella scoring for Mass. Maritime, followed by another pair from Jack Iversen and Kane. It would be 5-1 as Manhattanville would score a pair themselves from Michael Swift (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) and Drew Palladino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) to close out the first half, down 5-3. This would be the lowest combined scoring game the Valiants have competed in since Apr. 16, 2022.

It would be a back-and-forth affair for the Valiants and Buccaneers coming out of the half as Kane would get another on the board before Berch would score another man up goal. It would then be back-to-back goals from Iversen and Kane to take a 9-5 lead. Manhattanville would find a bit of offensive enterprise as Nick Cornelia (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) would score at 8:41 followed by Swift scoring his second of the day at 11:33 then Cornelia scoring another to bring the score within one. Mass. Maritime would use up the remaining time to score a pair from Kane and Buckley with 23 seconds and one second remaining to keep the lead, 11-8.

The fourth quarter would be a Buccaneer offensive explosion as they scored seven goals to secure the win. Quinn Mucha would score the first of the quarter for Mass. Maritime before Dylan Foley (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) would each notch a goal for Manhattanville. It would then be five straight to close out the game, a pair from Mucha and Iversen and one from Cooper McIntire. The Buccaneers would improve to 2-1 with the victory.

In net, Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made 12 saves through 60 minutes of play. It would be his third straight game with 10 or more saves. He ends the weekend with a 12.25 goals-against average and .478 save percentage.

The Buccaneers would hold a massive advantage in faceoffs, winning 22 to the Valiants' 8. Aaron Goldstein (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) would earn all eight wins in the circle.

Chris Perrone (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun), Swift, and Cornelia each collected four ground balls to lead the team's effort. Cornelia also caused three turnovers along with Mike Mooney (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee) in their leading defensive performances.

Manhattanville would go 19-24 in clearing attempts.

The Valiants are back on their home turf against Drew on Wednesday at 12 p.m. for a doubleheader as women's lacrosse follows up with a game against Emmanuel at 4 p.m.
