Men's Lacrosse Bested By Drew, 17-10

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team fell on a rainy Wednesday afternoon to Drew University by a final of 17-10. The loss is the Valiants' third straight as the team drops back to .500 on the season at 3-3 overall.

The Rangers scored six goals in each of the first two quarters to pull away as the Valiants were unable to keep pace as the duo of Riley Zeer and Mike DeMayo accounted for 11 of the visiting team's goals.

The teams traded opening goals back-and-forth en route to a 3-3 stalemate through the opening 9 minutes. Tyler Berch (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) began the tallies 1:50 into the contest, scoring from Frank Tallerico (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) on a man-up opportunity following a pushing penalty charged to the Rangers. Zeer began his six-goal day by knotting things up at the 9:55 mark. Nick Corenlia and Zeer traded goals over the following minute before Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) once again put the Valiants ahead with 6:55 left in the quarter. DeMayo answered back with his first of five goals in the game, kicking off a 4-0 goal run over the final 5:49 of the quarter to put Drew up 6-3.

The Valiants had a golden opportunity to make up ground after an illegal crosse penalty was charged to the Rangers, putting the home team up a man for three minutes on the non-releasable penalty. However, it would be Drew taking advantage as DeMayo scored a pair of man-down goals while killing off the penalty to go up 8-3. Cornelia ended Drew's six-goal streak by scoring a man-up goal off a pushing penalty from Frank Tallerico (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township). The Rangers added three more off a pair of goals from the Larmore brothers Tommy and Joey before Zeer netted his fourth goal of the day. The Valiants closed out the half with a pair of man-up goals, first from the Tallerico-to-Cornelia connection before Drew Palladino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) scored from Michael Swift (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) with 4:11 left in the half. Charlie Collins added the final first half goal for the Rangers as Drew led 12-6 across the first 30 minutes.

The Rangers furthered their advantage by scoring all three goals of the third quarter. Zeer wrapped up his day in the goal column with his final two tallies before assisting on Kellum Foster-Palmer's man-up goal with 2:12 left in the quarter to go up 15-6.

The Valiants outscored the Rangers 4-2 over the final quarter. Cornelia netted the team's first goal of the fourth from Dash Munson (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) with 12:36 left in regulation. Larkin then scored a man-up goal from Swift three minutes later. Drew added their final two goals from DeMayo to go up 17-8. The Valiants scored twice in the final minute, first with Palladino striking from Nick Corace (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) before Cornelia scored his fifth of the game with 14 ticks left on the clock.

Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) finished with 19 saves for the Valiants in the loss. It was a new season-high stop total for the sophomore netminder, who has now made 12 or more saves in four straight games.

Ulzheimer also led the team with five ground balls, followed by four by both Larkin and Francisco Rosas (Stratford, Conn./Stratford). Chris Gragano and Mike Mooney (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee) both caused a pair of turnovers for the Valiant defensive squad.

Drew dominated the faceoff battle, 24-5. Four of the Valiants wins were earned by Aaron Goldstein (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central), with Tim Beahm (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) accounting for the other.
