PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – Picking up a second-straight conference win, the Manhattanville University men's lacrosse team defeated Saint Joseph's Long Island on Saturday afternoon by a final of 18-7. The victory improves the team's overall record to 6-7 while climbing to 2-1 in Skyline Conference action.
The Valiants outscored the Golden Eagles in each quarter, pulling away with a 10-2 second half. Manhattanville got out to a quick start with three straight to open up the game over the first 3:15.
Nick Cornelia (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) scored the first two tallies while
Michael Swift (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) notched the third. Saint Joe's got right back in with a goal by Michael Carere and two from Caden Stubba to tie up the game with five minutes left in the opening quarter. Cornelia reestablished the lead for the Valiants with a first quarter hat trick, putting Manhattanville up 4-3 with 2:29 left in the quarter.
After Swift's second of the day put the Vals up by two, goals from Stubba and Carere tied the game up once again at 5-5. Over the final five minutes of the half, Manhattanville scored three more times.
Tyler Berch (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) scored the next two goals off assists by
Drew Palladino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) and Swift to put the visiting squad back up by two. Cornelia wrapped up his stellar half with his fourth goal, scoring five seconds before halftime to extend the Valiant lead up to three, 8-5.
While Stubba began the second half scoring with a goal 3:41 into the third quarter, the Valiants went on a 10-goal run to put the contest out of reach. Manhattanville scored four goals in the final five minutes of the third, getting a pair from both Swift and Cornelia. Swift recorded assists on both Cornelia tallies before Cornelia repaid the favor on Swift's quarter-ender with two seconds left in the third.
Six different goal scorers carried the scoring streak through the fourth quarter. Palladino,
Dash Munson (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield), Cornelia,
Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains), Berch and
Dom Janavey (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) all found the back of the net to further Manhattanville's lead up to 18-6 with 4:05 left to play. Swift picked up two assists in the run, while
James Weinbaum (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) added one helper. The Golden Eagles got one more goal from Stubba, his fifth of the day, before the final horn sounded.
Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) collected the win with four saves over his 55 minutes in net.
Cody Johnston (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) played the final five minutes, allowing one goal and making a save.
Aaron Goldstein (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) and
Nick Padovani (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) led the Valiants' ground ball effort while serving as the faceoff specialists. Goldstein won a team-high eight faceoffs while collecting six grounders to lead the team. Padovani won six faceoffs and collected five ground balls. Swift and
Matthew Newman (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) finished with four ground balls apiece, with Newman causing a team-leading four turnovers. Cornelia and
Francisco Rosas (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) caused three turnovers each.
