Men’s Tennis Continues Winning Streak with Win over St. Joe’s Long Island

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Back on the home courts once again, the Manhattanville University men's tennis team defeated St. Joseph's Long Island, 7-2, on Tuesday afternoon. With the victory, the Valiants improved to 6-3 overall on the season and a perfect 4-0 in Skyline Conference play.

A clean sweep in doubles action put the Valiants ahead early in the match, 3-0. In the top flight, James Hourihan (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) and Weston Goodwin (Freeport, Maine/Freeport) notched an 8-0 win over the tandem of Ryan Freeley and Nick Nemickas. Shiel Loganadan (New York, N.Y./Mary McDowell Friends) and Derwin Guzman (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglass Academy) emerged victorious in No. 2 doubles against Nolan Knipfing and Dylan VonBrook, 8-2. Griffin Forberg (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield-Ludlowe) and Carter Hunter-Crump (Denver, Colo./Centaurus) took the No. 3 doubles slot with an 8-1 win over Vincent Engel and Anthony Flaccomio.

The Valiants got a quick pair of wins to open up singles action. Hourihan took care of business against Freeley in the No. 1 matchup with a 6-1, 6-0 final, followed shortly after by Guzman with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles against VonBrook. Goodwin completed his match next at the No. 2 flight, tallying a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Nemickas. At No. 3 singles, Loganadan tallied the victory over Knipfing with a 6-1, 6-2 win. Newcomer Thomas Hitchcock (New York, N.Y./Glenholme School) was slated at No. 6 singles while falling 1-6, 6-3, 11-9 against Flaccomio. Justin White (Brooklyn, N.Y./Mary McDowell Friends School) was also defeated 4-6, 6-7 tiebreaker loss to Engel at No. 5 singles.

The Valiants head to Long Island on Thursday to meet Farmingdale State for a 4 p.m. conference match.
