Baseball Splits Twinbill at Purchase

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University baseball team split twinbill action against Purchase College on Sunday afternoon, taking one of the pair against their Skyline neighbors. The split moves the Valiants' record to 14-16 overall and 6-8 in conference play entering the final two weeks of the season.

Game One Recap: Manhattanville 0, Purchase 4
The Panthers successfully shut down the Valiant offense in the opener as Manhattanville was limited to just one hit over the course of the seven inning affair with Myles Scarry tossing a gem for Purchase.

Michael Musantry (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) delivered the lone base hit for Manhattanville, a sixth inning single to break up Scarry's no-hit bid. Still, the Panther senior navigated the runner alongside his one walk and one hit batter to shutout the Valiants for the first time since March 29 against Farmingdale, striking out seven.

Purchase took control of the game with a three-run fourth inning. Tyler Della Mura began a one-out rally with a double before Patrick Reyes and Frank Rega delivered back-to-back RBI singles. Two batters later, a Sam Saltzman single plated the third run of the game.

All three fourth inning runs, in addition to the Panthers' insurance run in the fourth, were charged to Gregory Esposito (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay) who fell to 2-1 on the season with the loss. The graduate pitcher struck out five, allowing the four runs on seven hits and a walk in 5.1 innings of work. Aidan Tumbleson (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) recorded the final two outs for the Manhattanville staff, striking out one and allowing a hit in the sixth.

In addition to reaching base twice on a hit and a walk, Musantry stole a base for the Valiants.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 5, Purchase 2
The Valiants bounced back in the second half of the doubleheader with 14 hits to plate five runs and earn the twinbill split.

Manhattanville plated four of their runs across the opening four innings, with Marco Clara (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) getting the game started with a two-run homer in the first, scoring Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach).

Musantry drove in the next two for the Valiants, plating Ryan Osso (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) on an RBI double in the second before plating CJ Archul (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) on an RBI groundout in the fourth to put Manhattanville up 4-0.

The Panthers cut the deficit in half in the fifth as Jemal Betances hit an RBI triple before scoring on Trevor Zanderzuk's single. That would be all Purchase would muster against Ryan McCann (Medford, N.Y./Longwood) as the sophomore tossed the first nine inning complete game of his career. McCann allowed eight total hits in his third win of the year, striking out six and putting up zeroes in every inning outside of the fifth.

Manhattanville tacked on an insurance run in the ninth on a Gregory Tashik (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park Jr./Sr.) single that allowed Anthony Pressimone (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) to score. McCann closed out the 5-2 win by setting down the side in order in the bottom half.

Six different batters logged multihit games in the win, with Musantry's two hits both going for doubles. Clara, Osso, Tashik, Pressimone and Joseph McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) all joined Musantry with a pair of hits. The Valiants also were mobile on the basepaths, with Osso, Parisi, Tashik and Archul all swiping a bag.
