KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University men's tennis team began its Skyline Conference slate on Saturday afternoon with a 6-3 victory at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. With the win, the Valiants improve to 2-3 overall on the season.
Things got off to a good start for the Valiants with Manhattanville taking two of the three doubles points. After
Derwin Guzman (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglass Academy) and
Shiel Loganadan (New York, N.Y./Mary McDowell Friends) were defeated by Gabby Eitkis and Brent Mathews in the No. 2 flight, 5-8, the top pairing of
James Hourihan (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) and
Weston Goodwin (Freeport, Maine/Freeport) defeated RJ Novak and Connor McQuade 8-3 to tie the match up at a point apiece. All eyes turned to the last remaining contest on the No. 3 court as
Carter Hunter-Crump (Denver, Colo./Centaurus) and
Griffin Forberg (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield-Ludlowe) found themselves locked in a marathon with Patrick Novotny and Alex Lewis. The match would go to a tiebreaker, but the Valiants' No. 3 tandem edged out an 8-7 (7-2) victory to go into singles play up 2-1.
The Valiants got things done and secured the match win by earning the victory each of the bottom four singles flights.
