Men’s Tennis Emerges Triumphant Over Baruch

PURCHASE, N.Y. - Down to the last flight and needing a third set to edge out the victory, the Manhattanville University men's tennis team was victorious against Baruch, 5-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Manhattanville Tennis Courts. The Valiants now sit at an even 3-3, taking a brief pause from conference play.

The Valiants came out of the gates fast, taking the No. 3 doubles flight with the tandem of Griffin Forberg (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield-Ludlowe) and Carter Hunter-Crump (Denver, Colo./Centaurus) toppling Reda Ljazouli and Jordan Hernandez, 8-1. Leading into the second doubles flight, the Bearcats were victorious on the second court, 8-1, as Tuna Nergizoglu and Liam Cooper took down Shiel Loganadan (New York, N.Y./Mary McDowell Friends) and Derwin Guzman (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglass Academy), leaving the final doubles point to the number one court. Manhattanville secured the last point as Weston Goodwin (Freeport, Maine/Freeport) and James Hourihan (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) carried the day against Juan Paredes and Nicholas Santiago, 8-6, in the topflight to see the Valiants hold a 2-1 lead as the contest headed into singles action. 

Baruch quickly leveled the contest as the singles was underway, as Santiago defeated Loganadan, 6-2, 6-1, having the match tied at two-all. Forberg gave the Valiants the lead in the fourth flight, gaining the upper hand against Cooper, 6-3, 6-1. However, the Bearcats would not go away, as on the No. 5-court Ljazouli would emerge victorious over Guzman, 6-4, 6-2, tying the contest at three-apiece, leading into the sixth flight. Hunter-Crump, would once again, give Manhattanville the lead, when he defeated Steven Margolis, 6-3, 6-3, seeing the score stand at 4-3 in the Valiants' favor. In the topflight, Nergizoglu would down Hourihan, 6-3, 6-2, tying the match at 4-4, leaving the game to boil down to the second flight. In said second flight, Goodwin would drop the first set to Paredes, 6-3, with Goodwin storming back in the next set, 7-5, having the victory come down to a third, and final set. Goodwin would prevail 10-6, giving the Valiants the 5-4, white knuckle victory.
