Men's Lacrosse Stymies Mount Saint Mary, 10-6

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University men's lacrosse team brought an end to a four-game slide on Tuesday afternoon as the Valiants earned their first conference win of the season with a 10-6 triumph over Mount Saint Mary. Manhattanville improves to 5-7 overall with the win and is now 1-1 in the Skyline Conference.

The Valiants staked claim to a 5-0 lead through the opening 20 minutes of game time which proved to be enough in what turned out to be a defense-led contest. Manhattanville earned all four first quarter goals with Nick Cornelia (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) delivering the keynote with his 38th goal of the season from Tyler Berch (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) 57 seconds into the contest. The duo struck again with 10:48 left in the opening quarter. The score held stagnant until Manhattanville added two tallies in the final 90 seconds. Michael Swift (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) put the Valiants up 3-0 before Dash Munson (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) added the final strike of the frame with four seconds left to put Manhattanville up by four.

The scoring run carried into the second quarter as Swift finished off a feed from Drew Palladino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) with 9:08 left in the half. The Knights logged their first goal of the day two minutes later as Larry Frank broke up the shutout by way of Joe Keating. The teams traded a goal apiece as the half drew to a close, with Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) scoring from Cornelia with 3:30 left in the half. Xavier Rodriguez logged the Knights' second goal in the closing seconds to chip into Manhattanville's lead at 6-2 through 30 minutes of play.

Manhattanville controlled the pace of play out of the intermission, scoring the first three goals of the second half. Swift was assisted by Palladino for a second time to begin the quarter's scoring before Larkin added his second goal of the day from Cornelia with 7:05 left in the third. Berch got himself into the scoring column with 3:12 remaining on an unassisted tally to put the Valiants up 9-2. The Knights avoided being shutout for the quarter as Frank scored his second of the game with 23 seconds left, but it only made a slight dent in Manhattanville's 9-3 lead.

Mount Saint Mary outscored the Valiants 3-1 in the final quarter, but time was not on the Knights' side. After goals from Frank and Keating trimmed Manhattanville's lead down to four goals, Cornelia scored for the third time in the game off an assist by Matthew Newman (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac). Chris Murolo added one last goal for the Knights as the game winded down, bringing the final score to 10-6 in favor of the Valiants.

Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) picked up the win in net, making 11 saves in a full 60 minutes of action. The six goals against was the fewest he had allowed in a game this season as Ulzheimer's goals-against average dips to 14.18 with the win.

Ulzheimer's opposition on the other side of the field, Kenny Leen, shined for the Knights as he made 26 saves to keep Mount Saint Mary in the game.

Nick Corace (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) finished with a team-high four caused turnovers while collecting three ground balls. Francisco Rosas (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) forced three Knight turnovers, while five different Valiants finished the game with two caused turnovers.

Nick Padovani (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) won all ten of his faceoffs while finishing with a team-best nine ground balls. Swift and Ulzheimer both corralled four loose grounders.
