PURCHASE, N.Y. - Manhattanville University field hockey took to GoValiants.com field for the first game of their 2024 campaign against Oswego State this Friday. The Lakers took down the Valiants,3-1, in their first non-conference matchup of the season, having Manhattanville start off the year in the loss column.
With a scoreless first quarter it was the Valiants who struck first in the second. The first goal of the game came from senior Alyssa Monahan (East Fishkill, NY/John Jay High School) from a penalty corner. Sophomore Shannon Kenna inserted the ball to her cohort Sabina Cosmo (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) passing it off to Monahan, striking in the high right corner of the cage. Manhattanville managed to score the only goal in the quarter despite being outshot 16-2.
Oswego scored their first of three tallies in the third quarter. The first goal came early as the second half was underway with Bryleigh Beauchat striking the back of the cage 32 minutes into the game. A short eight minutes later, Julia Unger scored again for Oswego putting them ahead 2-1.
Immediately after the second goal, the Valiants shifted goalkeepers putting sophomore Hannah Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) in the cage who finished the final minutes of the game replacing graduate student Cat Morgan (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay Senior).
Ten minutes into the fourth quarter came the third and final goal. Coming from a penalty corner, Madi Stuckart inserted and scored for Oswego, making the score 3-1 for the Lakers.
In the final minutes of the contest, Manhattanville had two more penalty corners giving them an opportunity to score. Fiona Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) attempted a shot at 56 minutes which was saved by Lakers goalie Sam Krautheim. One minute later, another penalty corner was inserted by Keena which Oswego was able to clear away to end the game.
Fiona Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) led the team with three shots while Monohan followed behind with two.
Morgan racked up ten saves in the 38 minutes spent in the cage.
