Women's Tennis Defeated by New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday afternoon, dropping a 6-1 match at New Paltz. The Valiants drop to 1-1 overall on the year following the defeat.

The Hawks took the point in doubles action with victories in all three duo flights. The Valiants had their strongest showing on the show court, as Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and Adrianna Filippelli (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) lost a 7-5 decision to Justine Stanejko and Isabel van der Veen. Suzi Doyle (Devon, England/Exeter College) and Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) also put up a battle in the No. 2 tilt, ultimately falling to Sydney Sladicka and Angelica Gabriel 6-4. The Hawks completed the sweep with a 6-0 shutout by Nina Genzone and Olivia Kunz over Sara King (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and Mikhalia Grant (Montego Bay, Jamaica/New Visions Charter High School for Advanced Math and Science II).

Doyle earned the Valiants' sole point of the match in No. 2 singles as the sophomore defeated Sladicka 6-2, 1-6, 10-5. Unfortunately, Doyle's teammates were unable to replicate her success in their own solo play as the Hawks took the remaining five draws to earn the win. In the top flight, Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) was bested by Stanejko 6-1, 6-1, while her doubles partner Filippelli dropped a 6-4, 6-2 contest to van der Veen. Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) fell at the hands of Amirah Alston, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 4 slot, while King and Grant were blanked 6-0, 6-0 by Kunz and Gabriel, respectively.
