PURCHASE, N.Y. – Returning to the court for the second week of the season, the Manhattanville University women's tennis team handed the previously undefeated Baruch Bearcats their first loss of the season. With the 5-2 victory, the Valiants improve to 2-1 to begin the 2024 campaign, while Baurch falls to 5-1.
The lower seeds were the stars of the day for Manhattanville as the team notched wins in No. 2 and 3 Doubles and the bottom-four singles flights to earn the victory. After
Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and
Adrianna Filippelli (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) fell 6-2 to Baruch's top pairing of Aishika Yadav and Maria Calvo, the Valiants evened up the fight for the doubles point with a victory in 2s, with
Suzi Doyle (Devon, England/Exeter College) and
Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) defeating Ava Deguzman and Rianna Augustin 6-3. That sent the focus onto court three to determine who carried the advantage into singles competition. In the end,
Sara King (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and
Mikhalia Grant (Montego Bay, Jamaica/New Visions Charter High School for Advanced Math and Science II) secured their first win as a pairing, defeating Jacqueline Moreno and Maria Rojas 6-3 to claim the first point of the match for the Valiants.
The Bearcats responded in convincing fashion to begin singles play, earning a pair of 6-0, 6-0 shutouts across the top two flights. Deguzman blanked
Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) in the show court, while Doyle suffered an identical fate at the hands of Yadav one court over to put Baruch up 2-1.
Filippelli earned her first singles victory as a Valiant to even up the score as the freshman bested Calvo, 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 3 flight. Manhattanville went back in front as No. 4s wrapped up soon after, with
Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) defeating Moreno 6-3, 6-1. King officially earned the victory for the home squad with her 6-3, 6-1 decision over Rojas on the No. 5 court, while Grant earned the final point of the match with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) victory in No. 6 play.
