PURCHASE, N.Y- Completing back-to-back matches this week pushed the Valiants to their third win of the season. The Manhattanville University women's tennis team won 5-2 against Lehman College this evening. Manhattanville improves to 3-1 while Lehman falls to 1-4.
The Valiants earned the first point after winning each of the three doubles matches. Finishing first on the No.2 court were Suzi Doyle (Devon, England/Exeter College) and Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services). They were able to hold it down with a final score of 6-1 beating Elizabeth Nlemchukwu and Gabriela Vargas. Finishing second was the No.1 court where Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and Adrianna Filippelli (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) were teamed up. The pair won their match 6-3 against Viola Avdyli and Caroline Lopez. Finishing on the No.3 court were Sara King (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and Mikhalia Grant (Montego Bay, Jamaica/New Visions Charter High School for Advanced Math and Science II). Earning the third and final win of doubles with a score of 6-3 against Fernanda Navarete and Amaya Sanchez led to the first point being awarded to Manhattanville.
Filippelli continued the winning momentum for the Valiants as she finished her singles match first. She faced off against Vargas, beating her 6-2, 6-0. Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) finished next for Manhattanville piling another win to their column. She was able to win with a clean sheet 6-0, 6-0 against Nlemchukwu. Doyle finished third on court No.2 following in pursuit of her fellow classmate, winning 6-0, 6-0 against Lopez. King finished next for the Valiants beating her challenger Navarete 6-0, 6-0 as well. The final two matches of the day were totaled in the loss column for Manhattanville. Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) finished next putting up a tough fight against Avdyli but ultimately losing on the No.1 court 2-4, 4-6. The final contenders were Grant and Sanchez. Sanchez won the match 6-3, 6-2 giving Lehman their second point.
