Women's Tennis Victorious in Conference Opener Against Yeshiva

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University women's tennis team capped off a perfect 3-0 week with a third-straight 5-2 victory on Sunday afternoon, opening up Skyline Conference play by defeating Yeshiva at the historic Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The win brings the Valiants up to 4-1 overall on the season.

The Valiants opened up the day by winning the doubles point by taking the top two pairings. Manhattanville's top duo of Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and Adrianna Filipelli blanked Shira Adler and Gabrielle Resnick, 6-0, to open up play. Suzi Doyle (Devon, England/Exeter College) and Addison-Merecedes Ortiz followed in suit, securing a 6-1 victory in No. 2s over Anna Laufer and Sarah Leiderman. While Sara King (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and Mikhalia Grant (Montego Bay, Jamaica/New Visions Charter High School for Advanced Math and Science II) fell 6-1 to Sarah Grunseid and Eliana Tilem in No. 3 play, the results in the top two flights had the Valiants leading 1-0 in the match heading into singles play.

The doubles winners carried their success into solos, with all four earning wins to get the Valiants off to a 1-0 start in the Skyline. Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) defeated Adler 6-3, 6-0 in the top flight, while her partner Filipelli bested Leiderman in No. 3 play, 7-5, 6-1. The Valiants' No. 2 tandem also were victorious in their respective draws, with Doyle defeating Micka Mimoun 6-0, 6-2 in No. 2 action and Ortiz besting Laufer 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 4 showing.

King put up an incredible fight in the No. 5 against Grunseid, ultimately falling in a 7-6 (11-9), 6-4 decision. Wrapping up the day's play, Grant fell to Resnick 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 matchup.
