MADISON, N.J. - In their penultimate nonconference tune-up game, the Manhattanville University men's soccer team fell to Drew, 2-1, on Saturday evening. With the result, the Valiants slip to 2-3-1.
A second-half comeback attempt by the Valiants was stymied by the Rangers defensive third. Trailing in the second stanza, Manhattanville fought back to try and even the score, firing nine shots with five on goal in the final 45 minutes of the game. Mason Chetti (Ronkonoma, N.Y./Connetquot) was finally able to break through Drew netminder David Hoyt, following up his own shot that rattled off the crossbar, heading it into the back of the net as the clock ticked to the 78th minute. That would prove to be all the Valiant attack could muster on the day.
Drew's Nate Keller opened the scoring in the 39th minute, after he received a pass from the midfield into the 18-yard box from the boot of Kevin Kiernan, as Keller connected on a one-touch shot into the bottom left corner, beating the Valiant goaltender.
Kiernan later found a tally of his own in the second half, after he fired a shot at the Manhattanville netminder, with it being parried away and deflecting off the crossbar, chasing after his own rebound and one timing it into the net, for the 2-0 lead.
The Rangers held onto that lead as the second stanza played out, but not without the Valiants firing four shots in the final ten minutes, seeing the final score reside in Drew's favor, 2-1.
Graduate student Luis Granados (Pasadena, Calif./St. Francis) played all ninety minutes in net for the maroon and white, turning away six shots on net.
The hosts led in the shots department, 23-13, while the shots on goal disparity was more even as the Rangers led once again, 8-7.
