Women’s Soccer Draws Against USMMA in Conference Opener

PURCHASE, N.Y. - Under the light of GoValiants.com field, the Manhattanville women's soccer team fought to a scoreless draw against visiting Merchant Marine Academy, Tuesday night. Following the result, the Valiants now reside at 1-1-3, with their conference play record showing one tie.

In the first half, the Mariners produced more attacking chances compared to their counterparts, as USMMA fired off four shots before the Valiants had their first opportunity in the twentieth minute. Merchant Marine would continue the same tune in the latter part of the first half, outshooting their opponents, three to one.

More of the same would continue into the second stanza, as neither team could find the back netting. The Valiants found their best opportunity of the contest early in the second half, as a foul gave Manhattanville a free kick deep into opponent territory. Alexandra Brauer (Lake Grove, N.Y./St. John The Baptist Diocesan) stepped up to the ball and delivered a strike that the USMMA netminder Margaret Ripperger was able to parry into the crossbar, leading to scramble inside the box, inducing a flurry of shots for the Valiants. Brauer would produce the final chance on goal for the Valiants in the 62nd minute, but the goaltender was able to turn it away to keep the clean sheet.

Macey Girard (Branford, Conn./Branford) collected her second-straight blemish free contest, totaling two saves, placing her three away from 200 career saves.

All told, the Mariners outpaced the Valiants in shots, 13-6. Natalia Sanchez (Katonah, N.Y./Somers), Caitlin Ward (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown High School), and Brauer all registered shots in the contest, with the latter of the three producing the only shots on goal.
