MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - The Manhattanville University field hockey team fell to Morrisville due to a last-minute goal in overtime. While the Valiants maintained the lead through the first half, the Valiants ultimately dropped defensively in the second. With this loss, Manhattanville now holds a record of 1-6 overall. Â
With one second remaining on the clock in the 10-minute overtime period, Morrisville scored the game winning goal for a final score of 5-4. Freshman forward, Iyla Lilleby netted the goal for the Mustangs past Hannah Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) for the win. Â
Manhattanville was the first to score in the game. Taylor Benedetto (East Yaphank, N.Y./William Floyd) put the ball in the back of the cage with an assist from teammate Shannon Keena (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River). Two minutes later, Morrisville responded with a goal in the ninth minute tying the score, 1-1. Freshman defender Kylee Noyes was credited for the goal. Â
The Valiants came out strong offensively in the second quarter adding two more goals to their tally. Senior captain Alyssa Monahan (East Fishkill, NY/John Jay High School) scored off a penalty corner to make the score 2-1. Sophomore defender Sabina Cosmo (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) scored in the 28th minute to cap the first half off with a score of 3-1. Â
To start off the second half, the mustangs were a force to be reckoned with. Evening the score in the third quarter alone tied up the score, 3-3. Jazlyn Leet scored first for Morrisville making it 3-2 and Noyes got her second goal of the game to tie up the score 3-3. The Mustangs kept the momentum going, scoring their fourth goal of the game from Lilleby in the 52nd minute. A brief three minutes later the Valiants responded with a goal from sophomore forward Keira Guinan (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford)Â who leveled the game, 4-4. Â
With a tied score after the end of regulation, the Valiants and Mustangs went into a 10-minute overtime period. In the opening three minutes, Morrisville had three penalty corners and could not score in each of those opportunities. Manhattanville's defensive half crumbled in the literal last second of the contest giving up the deciding goal.Â
Doherty started and played all 70 minutes of the game, collecting seven saves.Â
Morrisville outshot Manhattanville 22-18 through the contest. Â
Fiona Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) led the Valiants with six shots and two on goal. Benedetto followed closely behind with five shots and two on goal. Â
