PURCHASE, N.Y. - Under the mist of mother nature, the Manhattanville University men's soccer team won against Farmingdale State, 1-0, Saturday afternoon. With the result, the Valiants see their record stand at 6-4-1 with an unbeaten 4-0 record in conference play.
In the first half, Manhattanville paced the contest in shots, 9-5, while also leading in shots on goal, 4-2. The best chances for the Valiants came in the eighth and eleventh minutes, respectively, as
Jostyn Blanco (Norwalk, Conn./Brien Mcmahon High School) and
Mason Chetti (Ronkonoma, N.Y./Connetquot) narrowly missed the chance to open the scoring. Blanco would have two more opportunities; both being turned away by the Rams netminder.
As the second stanza unfolded, more of the same would occur on the pitch as the Valiants continued to pepper the Rams goaltender with chances. In the 52nd minute,
Demba Cham (Bronx, NY/World View High School) fired a curling strike from outside the box that Anthony Martinez turned away in a spectacular diving save to keep the score even at one. Manhattanville finally broke the deadlock in the 66th minute, from the boot of Chetti after
Nick Diaz (Sylmar, Calif./Burbank) serviced a ball into the 18-yard box, bouncing over one Farmingdale defender and over the netminder, to Chetti and the wide-open goal. Manhattanville would dictate the pace of play over the remainder of the match, only allowing one shot on goal. The biggest save of the match happened to come from a player other than the Valiant goaltender, as
Anthony Mendez (Baltimore, MD/Concordia Prep) stopped a chance in the box that would've found the back netting, keeping the Valiants ahead 1-0 and registering a rare team save.
Luis Granados (Pasadena, Calif./St. Francis) would play all ninety minutes in goal for the Valiants, stopping four shots on net, for his second shutout of the season.
All told, Manhattanville would pace the Rams in shots, 19-12, and in shots on goal, 7-5. Chetti, Blanco, and
Tiernan McLaughlin (Yonkers, N.Y./Fordham Prep) all registered three shots in the contest, with
Alex Rojas (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd),
Joseph Kresse (Goshen, NY/Goshen High School), and
Nico Del Vescovo (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) slotted behind with two shots apiece.
