NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The Manhattanville University women's tennis team continues to persevere in conference play as they defeated Mount Saint Mary College 6-1. This brings them to an overall record of 6-1 and a conference record of 3-0.
The Valiants opened the match with doubles play, winning the first point. Shuffling back to the doubles partners they've had all season, on the No. 1 court, Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and Adrianna Filippelli (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) teamed up to win 6-0. They defeated freshman Autumn Strobach and Senior Victoria Valencia in a clean sweep. Following closely behind was the No.2 court dynamic duo, Suzi Doyle (Devon, England/Exeter College) and Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) defeating their competition, Angelina Mainiero and Megan Mann, 6-0. Playing at threes in a more rigorous competition was Sara King (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and Mikhalia Grant (Montego Bay, Jamaica/New Visions Charter High School for Advanced Math and Science II) who ultimately lost 7-5 to Paige Shrimpton and Peyton Curley. Winning two out of the three doubles matches secured Manhattanville the first point of the match.
Opening singles play, freshman Filippelli bested Mann on the No. 4 court, 6-1, 6-0. Doyle finished next seeing herself for the first time on the No.1 court in her collegiate career defeating Valencia 6-2, 6-0. Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) finished third for Manhattanville on the No. 2 court prevailing over Strobach 6-0, 6-1. The knights earned their first and only point of the match after winning on the No. 6 court next. Grant fell to Curley 6-1, 6-0. Playing just under her sister, Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) finished on the No. 3 court triumphing over Mainiero 6-1, 6-2. Graduate student King carried the tail end of the entire match for the Valiants finishing last winning 6-0, 6-1 defeating Shrimpton.
