Field Hockey Falls In Defensive Battle at Dean

FRANKLIN, Mass. – The Manhattanville University field hockey team dropped a 1-0 contest on Thursday afternoon at Dean College. The loss drops the Valiants to 0-3 to begin the season halfway through the team's four-game road trip.

The Bulldogs looked to avenge their 5-2 loss at the hands of the Valiants last season in Purchase. A far cry from the scoring offense that was on display in the 2023 matchup, Dean recorded the lone tally of the day in the fourth minute of play following Emma Gragen's third goal of the season off a pass from Emily Yazzetti.

Both teams had their chances despite the final score being as low as it was. The Valiants and Bulldogs finished with 12 total shots apiece, with Dean having a higher success rate of putting their chances on net. The Bulldogs ended the day with 11 shots on goal compared to Manhattanville's six.

While Dean controlled the offensive opportunities in the first half, outshooting the Valiants 10-3, Manhattanville took over in the second desperately looking for the equalizer. Manhattanville held a 9-2 shot discrepancy across the final 30 minutes, including outshooting Dean 5-0 in the fourth quarter.

Fiona Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) generated the most chances for Manhattanville, finishing with four total shot attempts, two of which went on goal. Alyssa Monahan (East Fishkill, NY/John Jay High School) and Charlotte Carroll (Somers, N.Y./Somers) posted identical stat lines of two shots with one on net, while Keira Guinan (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) put a pair of shots on target coming into the game as a substitute.

Cat Morgan (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay Senior) started the game in goal for Manhattanville, making three saves and surrendering the lone goal in the first quarter. Hannah Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) played the final 45 minutes, making seven saves in a shutout appearance.

On the other side of the field, Allie Stockwell made six saves for the Bulldogs to shutout Manhattanville. The Valiants offense has been cold to start out the season, registering one goal over the opening three games.

Manhattanville held a 6-3 penalty corner advantage, earning three in the final quarter as part of the comeback effort.
