Women’s Hockey Toppled in Close Battle With Rivier, 3-2

RYE, N.Y. - The Manhattanville University women's hockey team hit the ice at Playland for the second weekend in a row. In their first meeting ever, the Raiders of Rivier University came out on top to push the Valiants overall record to 4-8-2 overall. Manhattanville came back with their two goals of the contest in the third period alone. It was untimely was not in the cards as the Raiders emerged victorious.

The Valiants underclassmen came through for Manhattanville scoring both goals in the final stanza of play. Freshman Colby Cantor (Norwell, Mass./North American Hockey Academy) scored first for the Valiants 1:54 into the third period. With a quick pass from Catrina Chinetti (Hyde Park, Mass./Boston Latin Academy / East Coast Wizards), Cantor quickly flicked the puck into the net right in front of the crease. The final goal from the Valiants came late in the final minutes of play with 3:09 remaining in the contest. Abby Kauffman (Hershey, Pa./Hershey / New Jersey Colonials) scored in similar style to her cohort right in front of the net pushing the score to what stood till the end at 3-2.

At the top of the first two periods, it was the Raiders who struck first, and second. Manhattanville held the offensive upper hand most of the time outshooting the Raiders fourteen to six in the first period but at last could not find the back of the net. Rivier first year, Rebecca McKelvey scored with just under two minutes remaining in first twenty minutes of play. The raiders underclassman continued to persevere as sophomore forward Jessica Driscoll scored again in the second period of play making the score 2-0. The third and final goal was delivered by Tia Picardi about four minutes after the Valiants scored their first goal.

Manhattanville remained in double digits for shots throughout the contest holding the upper hand each period over the Raiders. The Valiants outshot Rivier 11-10 in the second period and 13-10 in the third. Ali Joly (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/Dunbarton / Caledon Coyotes) led the squad in shots with seven total while Chinetti followed closely behind with six. Lillee Dougherty (Wakefield, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey School) and Annie Niedermier (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) each have four a piece in the shooting extravaganza.

Senior goalie Jewells Austin (Bethlehem, Conn./Nonnewaug High School) protected the net for the Valiants this evening as she collected 23 saves. Austin stood tall accumulating five in the first period and nine a piece in the second and third periods.

Niedermier led the Valiants in faceoff wins like she has been all season with 17, the most from each side of the ice for the contest. Jada Mackinnon (Barrington, Nova Scotia, Canada/King's Edgehill School) contributed six wins to the mix while Joly added three.
