NEW LONDON, Conn. - Despite scoring the opening tally in the contest, the Manhattanville University women's hockey team dropped the mid-week matchup, 3-2, Tuesday night at Dayton Arena. With the loss, the Valiants fall to 4-9-2, with one final series of nonconference action before returning to UCHC play.
Manhattanville jumped out to an early lead with their special teams unit, but two Camel goals and a final late in the third was too much for the Valiants to climb.
Starting the scoring, the Valiants found themselves on the power play at the 11:16 mark thanks to a tripping call. Manhattanville found the back of the net at 01:24 from the stick of
Katherine Stahl (Middletown, R.I./Middletown) after receiving a feed from
Lulu LePage (Swansea, Mass./Elmira College) and
Ali Joly (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/Dunbarton / Caledon Coyotes), giving Manhattanville the 1-0 lead. Connecticut would answer back six minutes later with Kate Hagness lighting the lamp and evening the score at one-all as the contest headed into the first intermission.
Halfway through the second stanza, the Camels would garner themselves a 5-on-3 opportunity, and able to easily pick out a pass to an open shot for Lily Stern, as the Camels took their first lead of the contest, 2-1. Just as the home team did in the first, the Valiants would even things up just a few minutes later with youngster
Colby Cantor (Norwell, Mass./North American Hockey Academy) getting help from the defensive pairing of
Ciara Dauer (Winchester, Mass./Worcester Academy) and
Danika Aubin (Guy, Alberta, Canada/Northern Alberta Xtreme (CSSHL)) to level the score at 2-2.
In the third and final period, it looked like things were headed to overtime as neither team could break the deadlock, but Claire Sammons proved to be the hero on the night for the Camels, lighting the lamp with five minutes remaining and netting the deciding tally.
Freshman netminder
Olivia Cimorelli (West Deptford, N.J./The Hill School / Ironbound Elite) continued her outstanding rookie season, saving 31 shots in the contest for a .912 save percentage. The one-time UCHC goaltender of the week and two-time rookie of the week brings her season totals 327 saves with an overall .937 save percentage midway through her first campaign.
Harper Weisbeck (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) and Aubin led the Valiants in the shooting department, registering four apiece. The trio of Joly, Cantor, and
Annie Niedermier (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) all followed suit with three shots each. Manhattanville was outshot in the contest, 34-16.
Niedermier collected the most wins in the faceoff circle for Manhattanville with seven, as
Jada Mackinnon (Barrington, Nova Scotia, Canada/King's Edgehill School) paced closely behind with six.
