Women's Hockey Blanked By No. 5/7 Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Playing a ranked opponent for the first time since their season-opening series in November, the Manhattanville University women's hockey team was shutout on Friday afternoon by No. 5/7 SUNY Oswego, 6-0.

The Valiants (4-10-2) were held scoreless for the fifth time on the season, the first shutout Manhattanville has fallen victim to since the 5-0 loss in Codfish Bowl Consolation Game against St. Olaf. on Dec. 1. The Lakers (12-2-1), meanwhile, bounced back from their loss on Tuesday against No. 3 Amherst in dominating fashion.

Oswego outshot Manhattanville 53-11 in the contest. The Lakers fired 10 pucks on net in the opening period towards Olivia Cimorelli (West Deptford, N.J./The Hill School / Ironbound Elite), beating the Valiant netminder on their first power play opportunity of the day 13:40 into the opening period on a Mack Hull goal. Oswego added two more goals in the second from Leah Coley and Sydney Pinti before putting the game firmly out of reach with three tallies in the third. Meagan Smith scored 1:21 into the final frame while Jayden Kelly rounded out the Lakers' scoring display with back-to-back goals as Oswego fired 23 pucks on the Valiant net over the final 20 minutes.

Cimorelli did all she could against the relentless Laker offense, finishing the game with a career-high 47 saves. Her streak of limiting opponents to three or fewer goals comes to an end at seven-straight appearances, but the rookie netminder's season numbers continue to impress as she holds a 2.65 goals-against average and a .930 save percentage through her first 11 collegiate games.

With the Valiants' offensive chances limited, Taylor Willoughby (Camrose, Alberta, Canada/John Maland) found the most success generating looks against the Lakers' defensive schemes. The junior fired three shots at Mia DeVivo, the Oswego freshman goaltender who notched the shutout in her collegiate debut on Friday. Ali Joly (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/Dunbarton / Caledon Coyotes) finished with two shots on goal, both in the first period, while six other Valiants notched one shot apiece.

Manhattanville's skaters tried to aid their netminder by getting their sticks and bodies in front of the puck, blocking 19 shots in the game. Annie Niedermier (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) blocked a team-high three shots, while five Valiants—Willoughby, Catrina Chinetti (Hyde Park, Mass./Boston Latin Academy / East Coast Wizards), Abby Kauffman (Hershey, Pa./Hershey / New Jersey Colonials), Erin Flaherty (Rockland, Mass./Canterbury School) and Danika Aubin (Guy, Alberta, Canada/Northern Alberta Xtreme (CSSHL))—each blocked a pair of Laker shot attempts.

Oswego dominated the faceoff circle, 35-19. Niedermier continued to be Manhattanville's best on the draw, winning 10 faceoff battles.

The Valiants finished 0-for-2 on the power play, unable to log a shot attempt with the extra skater. The Lakers were unable to find success on their power plays beyond the first opportunity, going 1-ofr-3 with four shots.
