OSWEGO, N.Y. - Facing a ranked opponent for the second time in as many days, the Manhattanville University women's hockey team was blanked by Oswego, 8-3, on Saturday afternoon at Deborah F. Stanley Arena & Convocation Center.
Katherine Stahl (Middletown, R.I./Middletown) notched herself a brace on the day, scoring early in the second period and again in the midway through the third. The junior forward now holds four goals on the season, quadrupling her totals from the previous two years.
Catrina Chinetti (Hyde Park, Mass./Boston Latin Academy / East Coast Wizards) continued her goal scoring ways, after lighting the lamp for her sixth goal of the season, a mark which paces the Valiant offense.
Manhattanville was outshot by the Lakers, 51-18, in the contest. Newcomer
Elsa Haakonsen (Trumbull, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) got the nod in net for the Valiants, as she saved eleven shots faced her way. The Lakers would unleash 14 shots in the first stanza, finding the back netting 4:41 into the period from Rachel Corbett. Corbett would sink another just four minutes later, pushing the Oswego lead to 2-0. A power play opportunity for the Lakers would net dividends, as they tallied their third goal of the period to head into the first intermission with a 3-0 lead.
Manhattanville would cut into the Laker lead, as Stahl would find her first on the day after being set up by
Jada Mackinnon (Barrington, Nova Scotia, Canada/King's Edgehill School), settling the score at 3-1 2:04 into the second stanza. Oswego would answer back swiftly as Meagan Smith lit the lamp just under two minutes later to reestablish the three-goal margin.
Oswego would explode offensively in the first ten minutes of the final period for three goals, with the latter being of the short-handed variety, giving the Lakers a 7-1 lead halfway through the third period. Manhattanville would get two more goals back, both coming from the power play, as Stahl notched her second and Chinetti found the third on the day for Manhattanville, but 11 seconds later the Lakers would fire back, eventually seeing the score hold at 8-3.
In Haakonsen's first career start, she saved twelve shots sent her way in the 23:39 spent in net, eventually being relieved by
Olivia Cimorelli (West Deptford, N.J./The Hill School / Ironbound Elite), who spent the remainder of the contest in the crease. Cimorelli went on to save 31 attempts.
Chinetti and Stahl paced the Valiants in the shots category, with six and five, respectively.
Harper Weisbeck (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) and
Lillee Dougherty (Wakefield, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey School) rounded out the efforts on goal with three shots each.
Manhattanville was dominated in the faceoff circle, 47-24.
Annie Niedermier (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) collected the most wins on the day for the Valiants with 13, while Mackinnon followed with seven.
The Valiant power play was on fire, turning in a 2-for-3 day, while holding their opponents to a 1-of-4 performance.
