UTICA, N.Y. - In the midst of a four-game spree against opponents on or receiving votes in the poll, the Manhattanville University women's hockey team was overwhelmed by Utica, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at Adirondack Bank Center at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
The seven-goal margin is the largest since the Valiants took on the then ranked #10/10 Corland Red Dragons during the opening weekend of the campaign.
In the first period, the shot disparity would prove to be inconclusive, but the Pioneers would mount a four-goal lead in the contest's opening twenty minutes. Utica broke the deadlock 8:14 into the period, lighting the lamp from the stick of Hailey Modlin. Just under two minutes later, the Pioneers would ripple the net from Emma Corbett for a 2-0 lead. Using the extra skater for the next two tallies, Kendall Best and Madison Novotny would help Utica mount the 4-0 as the contest headed into the first intermission.
The Pioneers would find three more markers in the second period, scoring all before the nine-minute mark of elapsed time, and making way for Elsa Haakonsen (Trumbull, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) to shut the door on the Pioneers, saving the next seven attempts sent her way. Haakonsen would also save the remaining eight shots on goal in the third and final period, not allowing the Utica attack to add to their buffer.
Olivia Cimorelli (West Deptford, N.J./The Hill School / Ironbound Elite) started in net for the Valiants, saving ten shots faced her way. Haakonsen would relieve her, saving 15 shots.
Catrina Chinetti (Hyde Park, Mass./Boston Latin Academy / East Coast Wizards) led the offensive effort with four shots, as Taylor Willoughby (Camrose, Alberta, Canada/John Maland), Annie Niedermier (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame), and Danika Aubin (Guy, Alberta, Canada/Northern Alberta Xtreme (CSSHL)) all finished with three apiece.
Manhattanville was outplayed in the faceoff circle, 30-19. Lillee Dougherty (Wakefield, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey School), Jada Mackinnon (Barrington, Nova Scotia, Canada/King's Edgehill School), and Niedermier all collected three wins off the draw.
