Women’s Hockey Bested by No. 11/11 Utica

UTICA, N.Y. - Manhattanville University women's hockey completed the weekend series with two losses against Utica University. While the Valiants are facing a difficult season, they narrowed down the score differential significantly this time around. Manhattanville was cut down by Utica 2-0 bringing their record to 4-13-2 overall.

The Valiants held off the Pioneers for the entire first period. The pioneers held the offensive advantage outshooting Manhattanville 8-3. Elsa Haakonsen (Trumbull, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) found herself finishing the contest for the Valiants last night and continued to thrive in today's game defending for the entire matchup. Catrina Chinetti (Hyde Park, Mass./Boston Latin Academy / East Coast Wizards)Annie Niedermier (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) and Abby Mellen (Rockport, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon / Vermont Academy / East Coast Wizards) put up shots for the Valiants but could not find the back of the net.

Utica notched their first goal at the 11:38 mark of the second period. At even strength, Kaci Ryder of the Pioneers found the back of the net making the score 1-0. With a two-minute penalty awarded to Utica about a minute after the goal, the Valiants now had the extra man advantage in hopes of evening the score. Manhattanville ripped consistently wide shots during the penalty, finishing off the period 1-0.

The second and final goal from the Pioneers came at the 5:51 mark in the third stanza. Putting up an impressive sixteen shots compared to the Valiants three certainly reflected. Autumn Mish netted the final goal off of a powerplay for her third goal of the season. The Valiants managed to hold Utica to the 2-0 standing for the remainder of the contest.

Haakonsen tallied 34 saves for the entirely of the contest.

Chinetti took another rip at the net in the second period totaling two for the contest. Five other Valiants attempted to score tally one shot each.

Niedermier led the pack in face off wins with seven. Jada Mackinnon (Barrington, Nova Scotia, Canada/King's Edgehill School) followed closely behind with six. Lillee Dougherty (Wakefield, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey School) added two more to the mix.

Manhattanville perseveres despite their season demonstrating the longest losing streak in program history. Six more games are lying ahead for the Valiants before being playoff bound.
