PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University women's tennis team matched the greatest start to a season in program history on Wednesday as the Valiants defeated Purchase 6-1 on home court.
With the victory, Manhattanville improves to 4-0 (3-0 Skyline), becoming just the second Valiant team in program history to win four-straight matches to open a season. The last Manhattanville women's tennis team to start 4-0 was all the way back in 1998.
Beyond tying a mark 27 years strong, the Valiants kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness Month by taking to the courts donning shirts and ribbons in conjunction with a campus-wide initiative to wear pink to begin October.
The Valiants were dominant in doubles play, winning all three flights in quick succession to open the match with the advantage.
Maria Gutierrez (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) and
Mikhalia Grant (Montego Bay, Jamaica/New Visions Charter High School for Advanced Math and Science II) were the first pairing to wrap up the win, defeating Sierra Blanco and Lilia Qi 6-1 in No. 3s.
Addison Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and
Jenifer Lalman (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) then put the finishing touches on a 6-0 No. 2 sweep of Novalie Nguyen and Katelin Smith before
Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and Adriannna Filippelli took care of business on the show court, winning 6-2 over Amelia Perlmutter and Emma Arnaud.
Amaya carried her success into No. 2 solos, sweeping Arnaud 6-0, 6-0 as the first flight to finish. Filippelli went on to improve to 2-0 in top singles as the sophomore bested Perlmutter 6-3, 6-1. Purchase got on the board by taking No. 6 singles, with Grant falling to Sadie Killebrew 6-2, 6-3. That would be all the Panthers would muster as the Valiants went on to take the remaining three flights. Addison bested Blanco 6-3, 6-1 in No. 3s before Lalman defeated Smith 6-2, 6-3 on the No. 4 court. Gutierrez wrapped up the day by bouncing back from an opening set 5-7 loss to Nguyen with 6-1 and 6-4 decisions in the following two frames to secure the win.
