PURCHASE, N.Y. — The Manhattanville University women's tennis team fell short to Drew University 3-4 in a non-conference match up at the Manhattanville Tennis Courts, earning their first loss of the season.
In doubles play, the Valiants picked up one victory at the top of the lineup. Addison Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and Adrianna Filippelli (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) earned a hard-fought win at the one seed doubles, defeating Drew's Riley Roesel and Natalia Melendez Sanchez, 7–6(7–3).
At the second seed doubles, Maria Gutierrez (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) and Jenifer Lalman (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) battled throughout but fell 7–6 (7–3) to Danielle Pettoni and Kapriana Payami. Meanwhile, at the three seed doubles, Bianca Reyna (Yonkers, N.Y./Roosevelt) and Mikhalia Grant (Montego Bay, Jamaica/New Visions Charter High School for Advanced Math and Science II) were bested 6–1 by Daylin Evans and Anna Kupyna as Drew took a 2–1 lead after doubles play.
In singles play, the Valiants earned three victories across the lineup. Addison Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) continued her stellar form, battling through a tough second-set tiebreak to win at two seed singles, 6–3, 7–6 (7-3), over Danielle Pettoni. Jenifer Lalman (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) followed with a dominant straight-sets victory at three seed, defeating Natalia Melendez Sanchez 6–0, 6–3.
At No. 6 singles, Bianca Reyna (Yonkers, N.Y./Roosevelt) capped off Manhattanville's scoring with a strong 7–6 (7-3), 6–3 win against Destiny Medina.
On the top court, Adrianna Filippelli (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) pushed Drew's Riley Roesel to the limit in a back-and-forth match before falling 7–6 (7-4), 0-6, 7–6 (7-5). Maria Gutierrez (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) battled hard at the fourth seed but came up short against Kapriana Payami, 6–2, 7–6 (7-2), while Mikhalia Grant (Montego Bay, Jamaica/New Visions Charter High School for Advanced Math and Science II) was topped 6–0, 6–0 by Daylin Evans at No. 5.
