Women's Tennis Suffers First Conference Loss at Farmingdale

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University women's tennis team suffered its first Skyline Conference loss on Tuesday evening, dropping a hard-fought 4-3 match against Farmingdale State in a rematch of last year's Skyline Finals. The loss moves Manhattanville's record overall to 4-2 and 3-1 in the Skyline.

Adrianna Filippelli (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) and Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) emerged victorious in the top flight of doubles, dispatching Natalia Furchel and Kaelin Burnett, 6-2. The Rams were able to secure the opening point by winning the other two draws, as Addison Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) and Jenifer Lalman (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) fell in No. 2s to Martine McGowan and Gabreilla Loria, 6-2, while Maria Gutierrez (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) and Mikhalia Grant (Montego Bay, Jamaica/New Visions Charter High School for Advanced Math and Science II) were dispelled by a matching score by MacKenize Gisler and Mikayla DeMaria.

Farmingdale jumped out to a 3-0 lead after Grant retired in the No. 6 flight to DeMaria after dropping the first set 6-0 and trailing the second 3-0 while Loria bested Gutierrez in No. 5s, 6-3, 6-2. The Valiants got on the board with Filippelli's win in the No. 1 flight over Furchel, 6-4, 6-1. Amaya Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) pulled Manhattanville back within a point with her win on the No. 2 court over McGowan, 6-2, 6-2, but Burnett was able to secure the match victory for the Rams by outlasting Amaya's sister Addison, 6-4, 6-4 in No. 3s.

Lalman ended the night on a high note by winning the No. 4 showing against Gisler, winning the first set 6-1 and bouncing back from a 5-7 second set loss with a 10-8 win in the superset.
