PURCHASE, N.Y. – Despite a strong offensive push and a spirited comeback effort, the Manhattanville men's soccer team came up just short on Wednesday evening, falling 2-3 to the University of Mount Saint Vincent in Skyline Conference play.
The Dolphins struck first less than a minute into the match, as William Sornin found the back of the net to give Mount Saint Vincent an early 1–0 lead. The Valiants quickly regrouped and began to find rhythm on the attack, with Guido Sarango (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham) and Nickolas Pagan (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream North) each testing the keeper in the opening 20 minutes.
Their persistence paid off in the 22nd minute when Alex Rojas (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) collected his second goal of the season off an assist from Guido Sarango (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham), bringing home the equalizer to even the score 1–1.
Mount Saint Vincent regained the lead in the 29th minute as Sebastian Mesa found the back of the net, giving the Dolphins a 2–1 lead. The Valiants kept the pressure on to close the gap, nearly finding the equalizer in the 30th minute as Alec Pineda (Yonkers, N.Y./Port Chester) fired a shot that narrowly missed the mark. They trailed by one going into halftime.
Striking early yet again, the Dolphins extended their advantage with a goal from Jose Gonzalez in the 48th minute to make it 3–1. But the Valiants refused to go quietly. Just minutes later, Aiden Sivio (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) reignited Manhattanville's momentum with a goal in the 53rd minute, assisted by Roberto Velasquez-Osorio (Monticello, N.Y./Monticello), cutting the deficit to one.
Manhattanville continued to apply pressure through the remainder of the half, earning several corners and close scoring chances — including another near equalizer from Alec Pineda (Yonkers, N.Y./Port Chester) that sailed just high. Despite the strong push and heavy possession, the Valiants couldn't find the final touch needed to level the score.
Goalkeeper AJ Lucas (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) stood tall between the posts, making several crucial saves to keep the Valiants within reach throughout the match. Lucas faced eight shots — four on target — as Mount Saint Vincent narrowly topped Manhattanville in shots on goal by just one.
