Field Hockey Rallies Late, Falls Short to Pioneers

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Manhattanville field hockey pushed for a fourth-quarter rally but came up short in a 4-3 heartbreaker against William Paterson on Tuesday night at GoValiants.com Field.

The Valiants move to 5-11 on the season while the Pioneers (3-13) grab its third of the season.

FIRST HALF – MANHATTANVILLE 1, WILLIAM PATERSON 1

The first goal for the Valiants came from Sabina Cosmo (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison), rocketing the ball into the back right corner after a successful corner attempt. Cosmo's goal was assisted by Makenzie Muller and served as a response less than a minute after Julia Dennehy grabbed the first of the game for WPU.

Hannah Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) held the tie on the defensive side, posting two saves, as well as Cosmo finding herself a defensive save to wrap the first half of play.

SECOND HALF – WILLIAM PATERSON 4, MANHATTANVILLE 3

Q3

The Pioneers capitalized on the third quarter offensively. Ali Stoner put up two solo goals, putting the away team up by two going into the final 15 minutes.

Q4

The Valiants scored two goals in the middle of the final quarter, just under two minutes apart. The second goal of the game was scored on a penalty stroke, taken by Fiona Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South). The final scoring opportunity for the home team came with a zig-zag pass from Shannon Keena (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) to Lulu LePage (Swansea, Mass./Elmira College); LePage sent the pass back to Keena through the keeper's pads for the goal to be tapped in to the back of the cage.

The game-securing goal for the Pioneers came as Stoner secured her hat trick.

H.Doherty played a critical role in keeping the game within reach, posting four saves in the final quarter as well as stopping the conversion on a last-minute corner.

Up Next – The Valiants return home tomorrow, Oct 29, to face Gwynedd Mercy University (2-13, 0-3 AEC) in the regular season finale at GoValiants.com Field.
