Men's Basketball Battles on Road At Yeshiva

NEW YORK, N.Y. – In a game that came down to the wire, the Manhattanville University men's basketball team fell just short at Yeshiva University on Wednesday night, falling to the Maccabees by a final of 83-76.

Manhattanville (8-16, 4-11 Skyline) got 43 points from its leading scoring duo of Andrew Saint-Louis (Norwalk, Conn./Notre Dame Fairfield) and John Ranaghan (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) and battled all the way back from an 11-point second half deficit, but Yeshiva (15-9, 12-3 Skyline) went 19-of-22 at the free throw line over the final 20 minutes and ended the game on a 10-3 run to earn the win to open the final week of the regular season.

Yeshiva will remain tied with Sarah Lawrence for first place atop the Skyline's Gold Division with the win, while Manhattanville's postseason hopes will hang in the balance pending results of this weekend's season finale slate of games.

Saint-Louis posted his fourth-straight 20-point game and 13th overall on the year as he once again led the Manhattanville offense. The senior shot 7-of-17 from the field and was 7-of-8 at the free throw line while leading the Valiants with seven rebounds.

Ranaghan, meanwhile, scored 20 for the second game in a row as the sophomore has averaged 14.6 points a game through his second season at Manhattanville. Ranaghan shot 6-of-14 from the field and went 6-for-7 at the free throw line.

Carlos Urena (Corona, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) provided 12 points off the bench on four field goals and a pair of free throws as he sunk a pair from beyond the arc. The freshman also collected five rebounds, a total matched by Andrew Melillo (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) for the second-most on the team behind Saint-Louis.

The Maccabees were the beneficiaries of the night's first run, scoring six straight points to go up 8-4. Yeshiva maintained the lead until Urena drilled a three ball to even the score at 16-16 with ten minutes to go in the half. The three-pointer opened a 7-0 Valiant run featuring layups by Urena and Jack Quinn (Greenwich, Conn./The Winchendon School) to put the Valiants in front. Manhattanville's first-half lead peaked at a five-point advantage after Urena hit from deep again to put the Valiants up 25-20 with 7:07 left in the half. Yeshiva took over to close out the stanza, outscoring Manhattanville 16-4 to take a 36-29 lead into the locker room.

Roy Itcovichi hit a layup for Yeshiva out of the break to put the home team's lead up to nine. Manhattanville was unable to piece together a run longer than four points as the Maccabees mounted a response to every Valiant basket, ultimately going up 54-43 on a Tom Beza layup with 12 minutes left to play. Ranaghan hit a three to give Manhattanville life as the Valiants outscored Yeshiva 24-13 over the ensuing five an a half minutes to tie things up at 67-67 on a pair of Melillo free throws to set the stage for an exhilarating final five minutes.

Or Sundjyvsky and Max Zakheim put Yeshiva back ahead with a pair of layups with 3:51 left to go. The Valiants tied it up once again at 73-73 on a Saint-Louis three pointer, but Zakheim delivered a layup in the Maccabees' following possession. Yeshiva would not look back, finishing the night going 8-for-10 at the free throw line over the final 2:05 to close out the win.

The Valiants close out the regular season on Saturday at Sarah Lawrence at noon. Manhattanville will need to win against the Gryphons and get some help with other results around the conference in order to earn the No. 8 seed as the final postseason berth for the Skyline Conference Championship.
