MAHWAH, N.J. – Clashing against a Roadrunner team that received votes in the most recent Division III Baseball Coaches Poll, the Manhattanville University baseball team fell to Ramapo on the road on Monday afternoon, 10-5. The loss is the Valiants' third-straight, dropping Manhattanville's record to 12-8 on the year.
The Valiants got their hits, collecting 10 base knocks in the contest, but the Roadrunners prevented Manhattanville from settling in against any arm as Ramapo threw six different pitchers onto the mound in a bullpen game. Michael Zalinkanskas was the lone Roadrunner pitcher to go longer than two innings, tossing three frames in the start and holding Manhattanville to a run on five hits while striking out six.
Manhattanville took the lead against Zalinkanskas in the second as
Gabe Astrologo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic Prep) deposited a ball into right to score
Aidan Rosario (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich). The Valiants had a chance to do more damage with a pair in scoring position with one out and the bases loaded with two down, but Zalinkanskas got a strikeout and fly out to keep the deficit at one run.
Ramapo's bats immediately picked up their starter with four runs in the bottom half. The Roadrunners opened the inning with three straight triples to take the lead, adding two more runs as the frame progressed on two more hits and an error, leading 4-1 after sending eight batters to the plate.
Zalinkanskas departed in the fourth as the Valiants were able to tag Hunter Sabbers for an unearned run. Sabbers struggled with location in his inning of work, which
Ryan Osso (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) took full advantage of. The senior drew a one-out walk before advancing up to third on a pair of wild pitches and breaking for home on a passed ball for Manhattanville's second run of the game.
The Roadrunners tacked three more runs onto their lead in the fifth, doing all the damage with two outs. Ramapo collected three hits with two away to plate three runs, extending the lead to 7-2.
Matt Lalomia collected his third RBI of the game with a run-scoring single in the seventh to put the Roadrunners up 8-2.
Manhattanville got back into the run column in the eighth. With two outs,
Joe Kearney (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) drew a walk before Astrologo and
Michael Torres (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) hit back-to-back singles to load up the bases. Osso delivered again with a single to right to bring Kearney home and make it a five-run game.
Ramapo got one more timely hit off the bat of Zach Novakowski, a two-run double in the eighth to extend the home team's lead to 10-3.
The Valiants closed out the game with two runs in the ninth, loading up the bases on a
Mike Scozzafava (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) single, Delgado hit by pitch and Rosario single. Scozzafava came home on a wild pitch ahead of Kearney driving in Delgado on a ground out before the Roadrunners recorded the final out of the game one at bat later.
Manhattanville sent four pitchers to the mound in the loss.
Ryan Costa (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport Blue-Point) made the start, going four innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk, striking out three. He drops to 1-1 on the year with the loss.
Kevin DeMilia (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) surrendered three runs on three his in his lone inning of work, while
Aidan Tumbleson (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) tossed a pair of innings, allowing one run on four hits with two punchouts.
TJ Fuerst (Purchase, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) threw the final frame, allowing two runs on a pair of hits and a walk.
