Baseball Falls in Midweek Contest to Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Playing in their second of six in the week, the Manhattanville University baseball team was downed by the hosts Vassar, 8-4. With the result, the Valiants now reside at an overall record of 12-9 amidst a four-game skid.

Joseph McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) collected a notable milestone for his colligate career, notching his 100th career hit in the fifth inning with a single in the top of the fifth inning to left field.

Vassar started off the scoring in the second inning, after walking to lead off the inning. Runners would be placed on the corners because of a hit-by-pitch, making way for Ricardo Reyna to double to left field, driving in the baserunner on third. Miller Young would continue the extra base hits, lacing a double of his own to right field, scoring two and clearing the bases, making the score 3-0.

Marc Milano then hit a solo blast in the bottom of the third inning, putting the score at 4-0 in the Brewers favor.

Vassar would once again lead off their half of the with a baserunner, reaching with a hit-by-pitch. Reyna netted himself another double in his next at-bat, placing runners on second and third. A groundout in the next at-bat drove in the runner on third and advancing the other baserunner to 90 feet away from home plate. Another groundout produced the second run of the inning, having Vassar take a 6-0 margin.

Manhattanville was able to get on the board in the top of the sixth inning, leading off with a Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) single up the middle, followed by an Anthony Mezzaucella (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) walk to place runners on first and second. After being moved up by a groundout, Ryan Osso (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) drove in both runs with another single up the middle, putting the score at 6-2.

The Valiants sliced into the lead again in the next time up, loading the bases with a walk, single, and a hit-by-pitch. Jackson Branigan (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) would single up the middle, to drive in two runs, putting Manhattanville within striking distance, 6-4.

The Brewers added onto their lead in the bottom eighth, with Reyna continuing his hot day, driving in another baserunner, for a 7-4 lead. Another single to the shortstop brought home the second run of the inning, placing the score at 8-4.

Bard would shut down the Valiant offense in the top ninth, stranding two baserunners to see the final score sit at 8-4.
