Baseball Plates Four in the Ninth to Walk-Off Farmingdale, Earn Doubleheader Split with Rams

PURCHASE, N.Y. – A chaotic end to Game Two of Monday's action saw the Manhattanville University baseball team plated four runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk off Farmingdale State and earn a split of a Skyline Conference doubleheader. Manhattanville improves to 14-13 on the year with the pair of decisions, moving to 4-6 in conference play.

Game One Recap: Manhattanville 2, Farmingdale 4
Ryan McCann (Medford, N.Y./Longwood) went the distance on the mound for the Valiants in Game One, but the Manhattanville bats were limited to five hits in the seven inning affair to drop the opener to the Rams.

The junior McCann suffered his first loss of the season despite a solid outing. McCann threw seven innings for a third straight start, allowing four runs (three earned) in the outing. Farmingdale got to the Medford native for a season-high 10 hits, but McCann navigated the traffic and three walks by striking out four to keep the Valiants in the game.

Manhattanville got on the board in the second after Joshua Gillison (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) hit a leadoff double for the team's first base hit of the afternoon. The senior advanced to third on a ground out, and looked to be stranded there as the Rams got a foul out before getting CJ Archul (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) to roll over on one to short. However, the throw to first went wide, allowing Gillison to score with an unearned run.

The Rams responded in the top of the third with three straight hits to begin the inning to tie the game at 1-1. Manhattanville jumped back in front in the bottom half as Joseph McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) singled, stole second and raced home on a Brian Brezosky (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) single.
Richie Heyder hit a leadoff homer in the fifth before Kaolis Delacruz hit an RBI double leater in the inning to chase home an unearned run to put the Rams in front. Farmingdale would add an insurance tally in the seventh as a wild pitch allowed Delacruz to score from third.

Manhattanville threatened in their final at bats as a Gillison walk and Ryan Osso (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) single put the tying run on base with two outs, but Tyler DiRocco recorded his lone strikeout of his relief appearance to close out the win with his fourth save of the year.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 9, Farmingdale 8
A dramatic ninth inning that saw seven total runs scored was capped off by the Valiants rallying with two outs to score four times and capture their first walkoff win of the year.

After seeing the Rams break a 5-5 tie in the top of the ninth with three runs, Manhattanville faced an uphill battle with their final at-bats. Justin Encarnacion (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) walked and Bresozky reached on an error to get some momentum, but two quick outs threatened to bring an end to any sort of comeback. Osso drew a walk to load up the bases, allowing Gillison to deliver a two-run single to get the Valiants back within a run. The Rams pitching then unraveled, hitting Anthony Mezzaucella (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) and Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) to force home the tying run before a wild pitch allowed Anthony Caputo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) to race home from third with the winning run as the Valiants pulled off the improbable victory.

Prior to the chaos, the Rams got off to a quick start off Justin DiMartino's bases loaded triple in the first put the visitors up 3-0. Manhattanville was able to get two back in the bottom half after Rosario and McDonald were both hit by pitches as the first two batters. Osso loaded up the bases on a bunt single, allowing Gillison to drive in one on a single and Mezzaucella to pick up an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

The hit batters continued to set the table for Manhattanville in the second as Justin Encarnacion (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) was plunked to lead off. The Valiant catcher scored three batters later on McDonald's RBI single before Gillison collected his second RBI in as many innings with a sacrifice fly to plate Rosario with the go-ahead run.

Manhattanville's 4-3 lead held until the fifth when Delacruz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game. The Valiants went back in front in the bottom of the inning with a two out double by Mezzaucella and RBI single off the bat of Goohs.
The Rams tied the game again in the eighth on James Manzella's pinch hit RBI ground out before the drama in the ninth.

Ray White (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) took a no decision for the Valiants, pitching five innings in the start. The senior allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits while striking out four. Gregory Esposito (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay) pitched 3.2 innings of relief, giving up four runs on four hits and a walk with a pair of punchouts.

Ryan Costa (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport Blue-Point) was called upon to close out the ninth, allowing one inherited runner to score before getting the final out of the inning to become the pitcher of record following Manhattanville's comeback. The sophomore improves to 2-1 on the year with the win.

McDonald, Osso and Gillison each had two hits, with Gillison's four RBI leading the Valiants at the dish.
