PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University men's lacrosse team dropped a Tuesday night tilt to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 13-4. The Valiants fall to 3-10 overall with the loss and now sit at 2-2 in Skyline Conference play.
The Valiants were stymied by a stout USMMA defensive unit that held Manhattanville to a season-low goal total.
Michael Swift (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) scored twice for the home side for his 23
rd and 24
th tallies of the year, while
Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) netted his team-leading 26
th and
Freddie Steenson (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) scored his first collegiate goal.
The Mariners limited Manhattanville to just three total shots in the opening quarter as Merchant Marine built up a 5-0 lead. USMMA's run carried through the first five minutes of the second as Owen Barcus completed a first-half hatty to push the visiting side's lead up to 7-0. Swift got the Valiants on the board with 9:07 left in the half before USMMA scored four more goals to close out the quarter with an 11-1 lead.
With the Mariners sitting on the ten-goal cushion, Merchant Marine was content to play a more defensive approach to close out the contest as the teams combined for just five total goals over the final 30 minutes. Michael Emerick put USMMA up by 11 with the first goal of the second half before Swift scored a man-up tally by way of
Dom Janavey (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) in the closing minutes of the third. Landon Locke reestablished Merchant Marine's 11-goal advantage with 12:05 remaining before Steenson and Larkin off a Swift assist closed out the night.
Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) finished with 15 saves against the Mariner barrage, his eighth game this season with 15 or more stops. The junior sits at 148 saves for the season.
The Valiants' faceoff specialists
Nick Padovani (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and
Aaron Goldstein (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) both won five draws as Manhattanville held a 10-9 advantage on the X.
Matthew Newman (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) walked away with a team-high four ground balls with a caused turnover, while
Drew Palladino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) and
Tim Beahm (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) each added three grounders.
Chris Gragnano (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook HS) was Manhattanville's defensive leader with a pair of forced giveaways, adding two ground balls of his own.
