PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - Seeing their three-game winning streak snapped, the Manhattanville University women's lacrosse team fell to home squad St. Joseph's-Long Island, 20-8, on Saturday afternoon. With the result, the Valiants now sit with an even 3-3 record in conference play.
To open the first period, the Golden Eagles went on a three-goal run from three different goal scorers, mounting a 3-0 lead in the first five minutes of play. Manhattanville was able to cut into the lead by one, with the stick of Ashley Glass (Mahopac, N.Y./Lakeland) being set up by Katherine Stahl (Middletown, R.I./Middletown), to see the score sit at 3-1. SJLI would continue to add onto their lead, scoring three more goals as the contest headed into the second quarter.
Kaci Pierce (Niantic, Conn./East Lyme) would net an unassisted goal 12:34 into the second quarter, settling the score at 6-2, but once again, the Golden Eagles would answer back with a flurry of goals, this time four in a row, now seeing the margin grow to 11-2. Manhattanville would find the final tally in the first half, and grab the opening goal in the second, both from Pietra Cabral (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) and putting the Valiants within seven goals.
St. Joe's continued to do their damage in runs, this time scoring six-in-a-row, putting the contest out of reach for the Valiants. Manhattanville was able to net three consolation goals in the fourth quarter from three different goal scorers, Cabral, Natale, and Stahl, seeing the final score of the tilt reside at 20-8.
Cabral paced the team with three points, as Stahl, Glass, and Pierce all followed behind with two apiece.
Mariah Stephens (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) led the unit on the defensive end with five ground ball pickups and two caused turnovers, as Natale and Megan McDonald (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) both finished with three ground balls.
McDonald played all sixty minutes in net for Manhattanville, turning away ten shots.
