WAYNE, N.J. - Playing in their final non-conference game of the season, the Manhattanville University baseball team succumbed to William Patterson, 15-7, on Tuesday afternoon. With the result, the Valiants slip to an even .500 mark, 16-16, with four conference series remaining.
Manhattanville was able to get on the board first, as
Joseph McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) led off the game with a single to center field.
Justin Encarnacion (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) was able to follow that up with a single of his own down the left field line, with a double steal putting both runners in scoring position on second and third. An RBI groundout from
Joshua Gillison (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) made way for the first runner of the contest, a 1-0 lead for the Valiants.
The Pioneers were able to net five runs on three hits in the bottom half of the first inning, after back-to-back-to-back extra base hits by the William Patterson offense, two doubles and a triple, gave the Pioneers a 5-1 lead after one.
A subsequent triple in the bottom second gave William Patterson another two runs, after the bases had two ducks on the pond from a fielder's choice and a double.
Valiants got one run back next time up, as
Anthony Peterson (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) led off with a triple down the right field line, later being driven in by McDonald on a RBI groundout to second, at a 7-2 mark.
William Patterson later hit a grand slam in the bottom of the third, putting the game out of reach for the Valiants, as the Valiants could only put up four more runs in the tilt, seeing the game end at a score of 15-7.
TJ Fuerst (Purchase, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) was tabbed with the loss on the mound, as he only lasted 1.2 innings with the ball.
Billy Anema (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) came in relief of Fuerst, pitching four and one-third innings, not allowing a single earned run.
McDonald and
Julius Kass (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) both finished the day with two hits, as McDonald also totaled four RBIs.
