PURCHASE, N.Y. - Totaling twenty-five hits on the day, the Manhattanville University baseball team defeated the visiting Panthers in the Skyline doubleheader, 7-0 and 13-7, on Friday afternoon. With the result, the Valiants now sit at 18-16 overall, climbing to an 8-6 record in conference play.
Game One: Manhattanville 7, Old Westbury 0
Ryan McCann (Medford, N.Y./Longwood) took the mound for game one, continuing his ace of the staff duties, tossing seven scoreless innings, only allowing five hits over his time on the bump while striking out four batters.
After two scoreless frames, Ryan Osso (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) started off the rally with a single to third base, subsequently swiping second base. After being moved up to third base, Julius Kass (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) brought home the baserunner with a single over the head of the leaping third baseman, for the first run of the game, 1-0.
In the third inning, Osso once again reached, swiping both second and third. Jackson Branigan (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) singled to center field to plate a second runner. Later in the inning, a double steal with runners on the corners, brought home the third run of the game after Justin Encarnacion (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) and Branigan both stole bases, for a 3-0 lead.
At the bottom of the fifth, Anthony Mezzacuella led off with a single to left field, followed by a hit-by-pitch to Joshua Gillison (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson), leading to another double steal to put runners in scoring position.
Manhattanville added on the final two runs in the bottom of the sixth, back-to-back singles, back-to-back wild pitches scored, seeing the game sit at 7-0.
Osso and Kass both finished the day with two hits, as Branigan, Mezzaucella and Marco Clara (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) all followed behind with one hit.
Game Two: Manhattanville 13, Old Westbury 7
The Panthers started the game with a bases-loaded no out situation, leading to a groundball double play to the third baseman, but scoring the runner from third base, 1-0. A single through the left side of the infield brought home the second runner of the inning, for a 2-0 lead after the top first.
Manhattanville would power back and take the lead in the bottom second starting off with an Encarnacion double to left center, followed by an Anthony Iazzetti (Tuxedo, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) double down the third base line. A single up the middle from Gillison drove in the runner from third, placing runners on the corners for Brian Brezosky (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) to single to right center, for a 3-2 ball game.
Old Westbury would power back in the top fourth after starting with a single and a walk, making way for an RBI single to right field. A following RBI single to shortstop, led to a sacrifice fly, another single that brought in the final run of the inning, seeing the Panthers take a 6-3 lead after four. Old Westbury added on another with at the next time up to bat, having the score sit at 7-3.
The Valiants answered back with six runs on six hits with Mezzaucella bringing home the first run of the inning with an RBI single, as Gillison subsequently cleared the bases with a two RBI tripled deep to right field, with Brezosky knocking in Gillison from third to tie the contest at 7-all. Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) drove in two more runs with a line drive to left field, giving Manhattanville a 9-7 lead.
Manhattanville added on another run with McDonald singling to center and taking second base, as Mezzaucella drove him in with a single of his own down the right field line, for a 10-7 ball game.
The Valiants would tack on three more insurance runs on three hits in the bottom of the eighth, leading to a 13-7 victory.
Mezzaucella and Gillison both finished the day with a 3-for-4 performance, and having multi-RBI days. Brezosky also tallied multiple RBIs with a 2-for-4 day at the plate.
Jake Warnock (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) earned the win for Manhattanville, pitching five and two-thirds innings in relief, striking out seven batters and allowing only two runs.
