BRONX, N.Y. - The Manhattanville University tennis season came to an end this afternoon against Sarah Lawrence College, dropping a hard-fought decision to the Gryphons, 4-3. Manhattanville ends their 2024-25 season with a 5-10 record going 1-6 in Skyline Conference play.
The Valiants dropped the first point of the match as they were unable to field the third doubles court. Lev Uitterhoeve (Maastricht, The Netherlands/Porta Mosana College) and Mario Alcala (Madrid, Spain/Hoosac School) took the first match from Sarah Lawrence, defeating Jules Voorhoeve and Avery Romano, 6-1. Simon Kopecky and Dylan Bernard secured the doubles point for the Gryphons outlasting John Curtin (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) and Derwin Guzman (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglass Academy), 6-3.
Heading into singles action, the Gryphons earned another two points as the Valiants could not field the No. 5 and No. 6 courts. With these deficits, Sarah Lawrence led the contest 3-0 right off the bat. The top slots were taken over by Uitterhoeve and Guzman on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts. Uitterhoeve earned the Valiants first point in his decisive match, defeating Simon Kopecky 6-3, 6-2. Guzman nabbed the second point for Manhattanville toppling Voorhoeve 6-0, 7-6, winning the tiebreaker with five points. Sarah Lawrence still led the match 3-2 with two matches still remaining. Curtin took residency on the No. 4 flight where he suffered a tough blow to Bernard 6-1, 6-0. While this match decided the contest, Alcala's game-for-game match finished out on the No. 3 court. Alcala dropped the first set to Romano 6-4 and fought back to win the next set 6-1. The final set came down to Romano securing seven points compared to Alcala's three in the closing moments.
