Men's Lacrosse Stumbles at Maritime

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University men's lacrosse team suffered a setback on Wednesday night, falling 17-8 at Skyline rival SUNY Maritime. The loss drops Manhattanville to 2-9 on the year with a 1-1 mark in conference play.

Mnahattanville's eight goals came courtesy of the trio of Tyler Berch (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset), Michael Swift (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) and Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains). The Valiants' three top scorers continued their solid offensive seasons on Wednesday night, with Berch and Swift each notching hat tricks while Larking added a two-goal effort. Berch and Larkin added assists to their point production, while Drew Palladino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) also picked up a helper.

Connor Tomich scored for Maritime while Larkin netted the equalizer for the only tow tallies across the first five minutes. The Privateers retook the lead with a pair of scores in the closing six minutes of a defensive-oriented opening quarter.

Maritime shifted gears in the second, outscoring Manhattanville 8-2 across the ensuing 15 minutes to seize momentum. The Privateers struck 30 seconds into the new quarter from Nicholas Uzakewicz. Berch was able to respond two minutes later, but Maritime followed suit with five straight tallies to go up 9-2. Berch picked up his second of the night with 3:26 left in the half, but Maritime would tack on two more in the closing minute to take an 11-3 lead into the break.

The Privateer run extended to eight-straight goals as the home team built up a 17-3 lead with 6:34 remaining in the quarter. The Valiants ended the night with five straight goals, including all three scores in the fourth quarter. Larkin and Swift each scored a goal to wrap up the third, while Berch picked up his third of the night 16 seconds into the fourth before Swift completed his hat trick with two strikes later in the quarter.

Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made the start, making nine saves in 38:26 of game time in the net. Mike Hopkins (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) closed out the night with a scoreless final 21:34, making six saves of his own.

Nick Padovani (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) won six faceoffs for Manhattanville, while Aaron Goldstein (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) picked up four wins on the draw. The Valiants' ground ball effort was led by five from Matthew Newman (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac), while the faceoff specialists combined for five themselves. Newman also forced a pair of turnovers, second to only Francisco Rosas' (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) three on the night.
