Valiants Battle but Fall to Cortland

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University men's soccer team battled hard but came up short in a 4–0 defeat to SUNY Cortland on Saturday afternoon.

The opening minutes saw both sides test the defensive lines, with Manhattanville's Johnny Antolino (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) firing high in the 11th minute. Cortland responded quickly, breaking through in the 15th minute when Scott Schuyler finished a feed from Aidan Miller for the 1–0 lead. Just over ten minutes later, Jake Hutter doubled the Red Dragons' advantage just before the 26th minute. The momentum turned heavily in the 33rd minute, when Cortland's Josh Carroll recovered from a missed penalty shot to bury the rebound and up their lead 3-0. Despite the setback, the Valiants continued pressing, generating multiple corners and shots late in the half from Antolino, Nico Del Vescovo (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive), Lucas Fernandez (Stamford, Conn./Stamford), Roberto Velasquez-Osorio (Monticello, N.Y./Monticello), and Luis Del Riego (Madrid, Spain/Rafa Nadal International), all of which narrowly missed the target.

Cortland controlled possession early in the second half, testing Lucas again with attempts from Schuyler and Carroll, but the senior keeper stayed sharp with several saves. Manhattanville responded with quality looks from Nickolas Pagan (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream North), David Trujillo (Tampa, Fla./Plant), and Griffin Van Cott (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen), but Cortland goalkeeper Jordan Ott matched Lucas with key stops. The Red Dragons sealed the match in the 71st minute when Gaetano Corrao converted a penalty kick to make it 4–0.

Manhattanville finished with 15 shots, including four on target and late efforts from Sarango, Antolino, and Alec Pineda (Yonkers, N.Y./Port Chester) that tested Jordan Ott, who made seven saves in the shutout. The Valiants also earned six corner kicks, while goalkeeper AJ Lucas (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) anchored the defense with four saves against relentless pressure.
