PURCHASE, N.Y. – Shannon Keena (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) delivered two goals on the night, highlighted by the overtime game-winner as the Manhattanville University field hockey team earned a 3-2 victory over the University of Saint Joseph Monday night at GoValiants.com Field.
The Valiants (1-4) earn its first victory of the year in a thriller against the Blue Jays (4-2).
FIRST HALF
Q1 – MANHATTANVILLE UNIVERSITY 0, UNIVERSITY OF SAINT JOSEPH 0
Both teams set the foundation of a defensive battle ahead, with Manhattanville getting off six shots and Saint Joseph recording one.
Q2 – MANHATTANVILLE UNIVERSITY 1, UNIVERSITY OF SAINT JOSEPH 0
Charlotte Carroll (Somers, N.Y./Somers) grabbed the first goal of the game, redirecting a shot from Fiona Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) on the second corner of the quarter.
The Valiants held the Blue Jays to just two shots in the first half of action.
SECOND HALF
Q3 – MANHATTANVILLE UNIVERSITY 1, UNIVERSITY OF SAINT JOSEPH 0
Defense kept the Blue Jays off the scoreboard with junior keeper Hannah Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) recording five saves and a stand-out diving defensive save from classmate Julia Huertas (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) on a penalty corner.
Q4 – MANHATTANVILLE UNIVERSITY 2, UNIVERSITY OF SAINT JOSEPH 2
The Valiants notched the team's second of the night with the aggressive cross from F. Doherty to Keena, knocking in the goal.
Saint Joseph broke up the shutout with a penalty corner goal from Aurelia Barker with just under eight and a half minutes remaining. The tie came from a goal from Grace Kociszewski while being up two players on the field two minutes later.
OVERTIME – MANHATTANVILLE UNIVERSITY 3, UNIVERSITY OF SAINT JOSEPH 2
The game-winning goal came just under three minutes into OT from junior Keena as she found the back of the cage off a breakaway from F.Doherty. Keena was in the right place at the right time and receiving the pass, lifting past the laid-out keeper, and securing the victory for the Valiants.
Game Notes
- Tonight marks the first OT victory since Sept. 19, 2022, with a 3-2 victory over Saint Joseph.
- Defense held Saint Joseph to two shots in the first half, the lowest number opponents have recorded this season.
- This marks Acting Head Coach Federica Turina Dellamaggiore's first collegiate coaching victory.
- F.Doherty recorded a career-high three assists, topping her previous record set with two on Sept. 3, 2023 against Dean.
