Corner Conversions Push Field Hockey to 5-0 Road Victory

PAXTON, MA. – Five Manhattanville field hockey Valiants score in the combined 5-0 shutout victory against Anna Maria College on Saturday afternoon at Caparso Field.

The Valiants (2-5) grab its first road win of the season while the Amcats (1-5, 0-1 MASCAC) drop third in a row.

FIRST HALF

Q1 – MANHATTANVILLE 1, ANNA MARIA 0

The Valiants scored first with Shannon Keena (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) one-on-one, finding her way around the keeper off a pass from Keira Guinan (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford).

Q2 – MANHATTANVILLE 3, ANNA MARIA 0

Three minutes into the quarter, Fiona Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) successfully converted during a penalty off a rocket from Emma Masie (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), bringing the away team out by two.

With 3:08 remaining in the first half, the Valiants pulled out another successful corner with the deflection pass from Guinan to Lulu LePage (Swansea, Mass./Elmira College), where she reversed the ball to the back of the cage.

Hannah Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) kept the point of the defense strong, with her back line not allowing any offensive advances from the Amcats in the first half.

SECOND HALF

Q3 – MANHATTANVILLE 3, ANNA MARIA 0

Shots from Sabina Cosmo (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) , F.Doherty , Emelina Leccese (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) , and Charlotte Carroll (Somers, N.Y./Somers) as the Valiants earned four additional penalty corners.

Q4 – MANHATTANVILLE 5, ANNA MARIA 0

Cheshire, Connecticut native, Julia Ward (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) , made her first appearance in goal for the final quarter.

After a cluster in front of the cage, Masie sent the ball to Guinan to grab her second of the season.

The second goal of the quarter came from a LePage breakaway with a reverse cross-keeper pass to Frankie Slippen (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Croton Harmon), who knocked it past the goal line for her first collegiate goal.

Game Notes

  • The Valiants are now 2-0 when leading at halftime.
  • The three goals scored in the first half mark a season high for the team, previously set at two in the Victory over Saint Joseph (4-2, 1-1 GNAC) on Sept. 15.
  • H.Doherty now sits at 39 saves on the year, rapidly approaching her season high of 70, set during the 2024 season.

Up Next – Continuing on the road, the Valiants head to New Haven, CT, to face Albertus Magnus College (0-4, 0-1 GNAC) on Monday, Sept. 22, at 7 PM.
