Leccese Leads Field Hockey to Second Straight Win

NEW HAVEN, CT – Freshman Emelina Leccese (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) paved the way for the Manhattanville University field hockey team in a 4-0 victory over Albertus Magnus College with two goals and one assist at Celentano Field on Monday night.

The Valiants (3-5) grab their second straight shutout win, pushing the Falcons to 0-6.

FIRST HALF

Q1 – MANHATTANVILLE 2, ALBERTUS 0

Starting strong, the Valiants pushed for back-to-back corners 6:35 into the game. In the second corner, the offense moved the momentum and took advantage of the spacing for Leccese to mark up the scoreboard for her first of the night.

With under two minutes remaining in the first quarter, Leccese redirected a pass around her defender to Emma Masie (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), waiting on the right post to knock in the second goal of the night.  

Q2 – MANHATTANVILLE 2, ALBERTUS 0

Hannah Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) stopped her first shot of the night, keeping the lead out by two and the Falcons off the board.

SECOND HALF

Q3 – MANHATTANVILLE 4, ALBERTUS 0

Junior Fiona Doherty (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) took the line for a penalty stroke and sent the ball directly to the back of the cage to further extend the lead to three.

The fourth score of the game came two minutes later after Leccese launched the sweep from the far right side of the circle directly to the back corner.

Q4 – MANHATTANVILLE 4, ALBERTUS 0

The Manhattanville defense line clinched the victory, not allowing any shots on the Falcons' three penalty corners.

Game Notes

Tonight's shutout was a three-way combined effort from keepers H.Doherty, Braydan Haas (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley) , and Julia Ward (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire).

With two goals, one assist, and three shots on goal, Leccese has grabbed new career highs in all three categories.

H.Doherty now has 40 saves on the season.

The Valiants put 10 of 12 shots on goal tonight for an 83% SOG on the night, the best of the season thus far.
